Just about out of options....
« on: October 13, 2007, 19:36:56 pm »
??? So, Bella (13 mos.) has an intolerance to dairy products. We then tried soy (as she was on soy formula) to which she also had bad tummy aches and constipation, switched to "lactose free" whole milk- same reaction only diarrhea but had severe tummy aches, started goat's milk today and within an hour of drinking it she is arching her back, tummy way tight, and screaming in pain.  What now?  Obviously none of these are going to work right now (will it be like that forever?) She does ok on rice milk but it's not very filling and the state doesn't reinburse for it (very expensive). I heard that there's a "toddler formula" that infants can go to after their infant formula & they have a soy formula. This was suggested to me - does anyone know anything about it? Thanks-Wendee

Riley has been on Rice Milk for over the last year. He is perfectly healthy, happy and thriving on it. At times, I wish he could drink cow's milk as it would be "easier" in terms of the amount of protein, fats etc in it. But really, it is not neccessary for a healthy diet. Where do you live? I buy our Rice Milk at Trader Joe's, which works out cheaper than at a regular grocery store. Do you have any near you?

Michele, I live out west in the states. I've not ever heard of Trader Joe's.  I've been getting it at the groc. store here and the cheapest I can find it is $3.89 per 1/2 gallon.  Bella is a foster daughter  that's in the process of going home to biomom (by Jan. 2008).  I know biomom will not buy it on her own so that's why the WIC program here reimburses for other types but not rice milk. They will reimburse the toddler formula if the Dr. will write a prescription. She loves the rice milk and drinks it really well it just isn't thick enough to keep her sleeping through the night (although there are other factors at work here, too.) Thanks for writing me back. Is Trader Joe's in the states?  Wendee

I have been following your other threads, but not posting as I have always been unsure of what to say. It's a sad situation, and since I am pregnant and hormonal, I decided to just stay quiet! Hugs to you, the whole thing sucks.

I don't really know much about formulas in general, but I have seen "follow-on" formulas in stores, for when babies are on solids. I am pretty sure Enfamil makes one. I am sure others will know more about them than I do.

Yes, Trader Joe's is here on the West Coast (in CA anyway) and I am pretty sure in other places. I pay $2.69 for a half-gallon, which is okay.
How is her intake of solids etc? Her drinking Rice Milk shouldn't affect her sleeping through. But I know there are other factors at play...you'd probably feel better if she was getting formula at her biomums because she can't be guaranteed good food there anyway.

Hi Wendee!

My LO also drinks rice milks and what you're paying sounds a little spendy.   ???  I get mine on Wal-mart in the cereal aisle; it doesn't have to be refrigerated until opened and it seems like it's cheaper than what you're paying.

I agree with Michelle that if she's getting enough solids, rice milk shouldn't prevent her sleeping through the night.  However, given her age and generally sensitive tummy, would be worth checking out the forumlas with Dr.   :)

Bethany & Michelle, thanks for the info. We actually looked for the rice milk in Walmart tonite & I couldn't find it anywhere so at least now I know where to look!  She had her really bad tummy ache at ther biomoms today during a visit which (although I felt bad for Bella) was way good for her biomom cuz she always acts like I'm making this crap up. Now she knows how intense the screaming, etc. is. When I told her that it's like that every night when she gives her dairy products or crap to eat and that Bella is in that much pain for possibly 4-5 hrs. at a time acting like that she was like "oh my gosh". duh.  I think she's maybe starting to "get" how difficult it is with her. She keeps saying "I don't know why she's like that, I'm not and neither are the boys" for awhile I thought she was actually trying to put the blame on me (as if that's possible). I keep wanting to scream "uummm, could it be cuz you used Meth throughout your pregnancy & it's jacked her system all up?!"  >:( ::)

She hasn't been eating well this last week (solids) as she's teething and had a cold (sore throat?) and was really congested. So she was drinking a lot and I let her cuz I wanted her to drink lots of fluids. She's kind of a finiky eater. Before we took her off the bottle, she ate solids really well but I couldn't get her to drink much, now that she's on a cup it's opposite.  ???

I wonder if I could use the rice milk and also supplement with the toddler formula? I'll check with the dr. on Monday.

Thanks a bunch ladies, Wendee  :-*

{{{hugs}}} Wendee and   >:( >:( :P >:( >:( to biomom.

I just bought some rice milk tonight and, here at least, it is $2.89 / half gallon.   They also have some in the refrigerator section, but it seems to be more expensive.

Wendee- Glad you have some good advice on the formula.  Sorry it didn't work out with goat's milk either.  :(  Poor little girl!  It really does sound like she has a lot going on now w/ teething, cold, and tummy pain.  I know my ds doesn't sleep through when he's in the middle of tm and colds are a 50/50.

Again hugs to you for being there and fighting for Bella!  :-* :-*

:D Thanks again, Bethany. It does help, that's way cheaper then the grocery store price! I didn't see any in the refrigerator section - just soy and "lactose free". The kind I've been getting is in the aisle and doesn't have to be in fridge til opened so I'll try the cereal aisle tomorrow. That price is even cheaper than the quart size ($2.90).  :o   How much does your lo drink in a week? Day? Bella's been going through a quart in about 2 1/2 days. Doesn't that sound like a lot? Do you get the organic kind? Is it enriched? Just plain flavor or vanilla? Mine is organic, enriched, and plain flavor. Wendee

Thanks Lena! It's easy to fight for her - I love her.  :-*

Binxyboo may be able to give you a better idea.   :-[

My ds still breastfeeds so for the most part we just use rice milk for cooking.  When I've been gone on overnight trips, then DH gives DS rice milk when we normally breastfeed.  We do give the vanilla rice milk when I'm gone (although when I finally wean him, will probably just give plain).  He does drink quite a lot of it--similar to what Bella drinks.

I just checked and what I buy is called "Rice Dream" and is organic and enriched.

It must be hard letting go and trying to figure everything out before she goes with her mom.  It is great that you are so loving to your foster kids, I don't know what else to say or how to say it.  Anyway, it may not be any cheaper but maybe you wouldn't have to use as much b/c of the protein content, but my lo loves almond  hazelnut milk.  You can also make your own and use the filtered out  nut stuff in muffins etc.  I know it isn't ideal, no reinmbursment.  but if you are desperate for some sleep...

I think there are rice based formulas, but not sure about that, that you have to get a prescription for.  I really hope you find what helps your little lo.

Ypu can also get elemental formulas like neocate and elecare. These are amino acid based and are only available on prescription. They taste terrible though and I know it can be hard to get insurance to cover it.

Bethany,

lol - that's the same exact kind we are using.  ;D ;D

~S~ - where do you get almond hazelnut milk?

She's doing well on the rice milk again. She woke last night from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. but I think it was out of habit and just couldn't settle down & go back to sleep. I'm kinda stuck on ideas for that one - but it drives me absolutely nuts.  ::)

Thanks guys! (I don't think that I'd want to do neocrate and elecare if they taste yucky. ) :P

Almond milk is easier to find than the hazelnut milk, but the brand is pacific foods for the hazelnut milk and there are a couple of brands of almond milk.  I get them at nicer grocery stores in larger towns (than the one I am in).  I know one of the stores you can ask them for certain products and they will stock them (the store is H.E.B.)  so you could ask at your grocery store.
