7 month old suddenly taking 45 mins naps
« on: October 14, 2007, 23:35:13 pm »
My 7 month old is an angel/textbook baby. He has always been right on target with naptimes (two naps of 1.5 hours each), 2.5 to 3 hours of activity in between. The problem now is that starting yesterday, he has been taking 45 minute naps. I have no idea why this happened. Nothing has changed. I don't think he is teething and we haven't started any new foods.

It has been easy to put him down for naps. He falls asleep easily but is up again 45 minutes later. I have no idea what to do. He wakes up grumpy so I know he needs more sleep but I can't seem to get him to sleep more. We already have 3 hours A time in between naps, should I extend this even longer?

Our former schedule:
8am Wake and breastfeed
930am solids
1030am Nap for 1.5 hours
12 wake and breastfeed
130pm solids
3pm nap for 1.5 hours
430pm wake and breastfeed
6pm solids then bathtime and bedtime routine
730pm bedtime

thanks in advance

Hi,

Usually, when my lo had a 45 minute nap it meant I needed to extend the A time.  I found around 7 months he made big jumps in his A time.  I might try extending it by 10 minutes or so.  That is always the advice I got and it always seemed to work.  Hope that helps.

I found that my DD's morning A time was a bit shorter than the rest for a long time, but when we were getting to the 2.5/3 hours + it seemed to catch up with the rest.  My DD is a textbook/angel and usually has been a good napper as well.  The 45 min naps for her have usually meant not enough A time, unless it's teething or milestones.  You could try extending the morning A time a bit to start with and that might get a better 1st nap, and the rest of the day might fall in place behind it, or you might find the need to extend throughout the day.

Thanks for the suggestions.
WE are currently doing about 3 hours between naps. Should I be trying to go for longer than this? That already seems like quite a long time.

Here is a link to average A times:

I think it all depends on the child.  If your DS is not napping as well as usual and showing signs that he needs to extend, then I don't think 3+ hours would be too long if it works for him.  It feels like my DD is constantly needing changes in her routine, and especially since we've been getting into 3+ hours of A time, we've been jiggling naps and bedtime around a lot to fit everything in.

I just wrote my own post, and then read this one.  Similar stuff i'm working through w/ my 10 month old.  I'm sure her troubles have been a need to extend her A time.  We're doing well extending the first one, and her nap has improved, but by the 2nd nap, she's overtired and is only napping an overtired 30 mins.  Should i not extend this 2nd nap until the first one is pretty well set?  Is it too much at once?
thanks!
