Help - 5mo old, awake for 2 hrs after sleeping 3 hrs???
« on: October 18, 2007, 19:23:06 pm »
I don't know what to do...
My DS goes to bed at 7pm, then wakes up at 10pm and is up for 2hrs, then falls back asleep for the night. When he's up, he's chatting to himself, sometimes cries, but usually not. I used to dream feed at 10pm, and now he wakes up. I have tried not feeding him, but he goes hystarical. So I feed him and put him back down, where he plays alone in the dark :(
Do you think he thinks 7-10 is a nap?? Should he go to bed later??
This is our day>

830am up
E 830am
A no more than 1.5hrs
S 945 to 1130 - 1200  (longest nap of the day)

E 1200
A no more than 2 hours
S 130-2 (this is the shortest nap of the day)

E 200
A no more than 2h
S 330 - 500

top-up eat at 600

Bedtime routine starts at 620, in bed by 700

S 7-10pm
Sometimes eats at 10pm
up 1000-1200
S 1200-800

Seems like he's OT by mid-day--the 30 min nap would indicate that.  If you shortened his A time previous to that nap (maybe 1.75 hours A time) that might extend that mid nap.  That way he wouldn't eat until 3:30/4pm. I would also think about putting him to bed a touch sooner and feeding him at that time.

Good tips, thanks!
Because he is sleeping in until 8 or 830am, should I be putting him to bed at 830pm???
OR, should, like you said, I try to extend his nap at lunchtime and get him to be by 7pm.
Greatly appreciated!

Meg,
I think if you are getting him up at 8:30 then he can probably handle a bedtime of 8:30. Certainly get him to bed earlier if he show signs of being tired.  Have you tried anything to work on that second nap?  I wouldn't let his first nap go over 2 hours, just in case it may be effecting the second.

I went through this a while back and the problem was that lo was getting up at 8:30/9 and I was trying to put him to bed at 7. He was just not ready for bedtime.  I started waking him at 7Am and getting him into the room with the most daylight. After a few days he was no longer staying awake for hours at night.  Of course, I have other problems, but at least I was able to solve that one!

You could try to add on a catnap at 5-6ish and that might extend his A time in the PM to where he wouldn't fall asleep at 7, but instead at 8.  This is our DS schedule.
