Laura - His day Friday did look really good.  It may have been teething, I guess you'll know in few days.  The only thing I can think is maybe he didn't have enough A time Friday and so was restless during the night, but the restless night would off led to him being OT the next day.

Amy - 1hr 15min naps are generally considered to be OT naps when you have finally transitioned onto just 1 nap a day.  If on 1 nap days you get a 1.15hr nap then its a sure bet the LO is OT and an early bedtime is recommended.

Hi,
I posted on here a few weeks ago, wondering whether my DD who is 13 months now is ready for 1 nap. We've been doing 2 naps- 20 mins in am,and 1 3/4 - 2 hrs from 12:45.This has been working brilliantly since she was 9 months or so,her early wakeups gradually got later and later,so up until recently we had 6:30/6:45 wakeups,so she had about 12 hrs night sleep..brilliant.Over the past few days she has started waking early again...6am.The first time she started crying so I went in and she had lost her lovie and couldn't find it,I gave her it and she went back to sleep straight away for nearly another hour. This morning, she woke again at 6am,babbled away and I think was drifting in and out of sleep. The mornings have started getting alot colder so I'm just wondering whether she's maybe waking up cold.I'm going to try an extra layer of clothing tonight and see if that helps, otherwise anyone got any ideas. When will I really know if she is ready for just the 1 nap?

Thanks

Clare x

For anyone who's interested, here's my ds's most recent schedule:

Sat--
(1.25 hr. am nap)
2:25 fell asleep for pm nap (1.5hr)
6:30 bedtime
NO NIGHT WAKINGS!! =)

Sun--
5:45 woke up
10:00 am nap (1 hr.)
2:30 pm nap (1 hr.)
6:15 bedtime (talked in bed until 6:45)

Still trying to see if there is any logic behind his night wakings and variable naps/mornings. Love the early bedtime though. Teething could be in play--although, honestly this has been going on for like 6 weeks, so I don't know if I can blame teething.  Maybe just a phantom phase (like you described, Amy--you never get what it was all about).

Hi everyone, we also have teething here! Leorah has one point of a molar through and three huge lumps and it has made her naps crazy! On Friday night she mantra cried all through the night but wasn't really awake and then Saturday her A times were less than 3 hours  :o It was Sunday we saw the tooth and it started making sense. Today she went was asleep for her nap at 11.30am (4½ A time) woke coughing after 50 mins and then went back to sleep after 13 mins until 13.30. She has been having an evening catnap of 20 mins while I take her walking but I can't see it being possible tonight and am wondering if I should just put her to bed at 6 instead? I don't like her to go to bed later than 7pm as the latest she sleeps is until just before 7 am and she is a kid who likes her 12 hour minimum nights or it really effects the next day. I think I'll just go for the 1 nap today, if only she napped that long everyday  ;D

Laura Rose, if L wakes early in the morning and has NWs it has always been due to OT but it seems your LO is taking good naps? Is he learning to do anything new? Maybe it's milestone related, all of L's have caused nightime distress  ::)

It might be a little over-optimistic to say he's taking good naps--that's really just the last 2 or 3 days--and usually only one hour.  Is that considered good? I think it could be teething.  Last night he went to sleep at 6:45 and slept through with no NW.  He woke at 5:15 and I did PU/PD.  He babbled and rested until 5:45, when I got him up to BF.

So (I don't know if this was a bad move, but...) he was very fussy--just crying and burying his head in my shoulder at 6:15 or so and I put him back to bed.  It's now almost 7 and he's been happily "talking" and resting quietly (I don't think he's fallen back to sleep, but he might). Was this a bad idea? Should I keep him up for his first nap at 10, even if he seems so tired?

Clarepie - Early wakings on their own can be caused if she is getting too much daytime sleep.  As for when she is ready for just 1 nap, I don't know that many of them are ready when it happens, hence this thread! I would say if the 20min am nap start to effect the pm nap, then its either time to switch or you can then try cutting am nap back to 15Min's, some even then go down to 10Min's before finally dropping it completely.  Remember when you do cut am nap to shorten the A time till next nap.  Approximate A times - nap lengths go as follows
30min nap = 3 - 3.5hrs A
20min nap = 2 - 2.5hrs A
15min nap = 1-1.5hrs A

Laura - if you get on worst day 2 1hr naps thats just fine as most will only do 2-2.5hrs when on just 1 nap with average 11.5hrs night sleep.  Lily will do 12hrs at night but only if she does 1.5hr nap, if she naps for 2hrs her night sleep is 11-11.5hrs.

Which reminds me, something to bear in mind is that when on just 1 nap a day, how much night sleep they get becomes more important than ever before and also seems to be easier affected by the length of that 1 nap.  On average always try to aim for 11.5hrs night sleep.

New mum, Thanks for the info.  Usually, a good day for ds is a total of 2 hrs. 15 min. (both naps).  I think he's still too young (12 m) to push for just one nap.(?) BTW, my dd (3 yrs) sleeps 3-4 hrs. for her one afternoon nap--crazy, huh!

Well L had one nap yesterday and was asleep by 6.20pm but woke coughing at 5.40am and ever went back to sleep  ::) She slept through the night and we never heard a sound which is unusual as she has been coughing the nights away. Not sure it was caused by OT, probably woke coughing and wasnt tired enough to go back to sleep. Oh well, two naps today. I still prefer the two naps and we are going to give two naps on Saturday whatever  happens so she can go to bed an hour later and hopefully adjust to the time change, fingers crossed! Since L has been having a long AM nap and short PM nap she has been sleeping until about 7am rather than 6am which we are loving!

Good nap vibes girls  :)

I think we're receiving the vibes here.  DS has had no NW in 3 nights and all naps have been over 45 min. I'm hoping we're settling into a good routine:
W 6-6:30
N 10 (1-1.5 hr)
N 2 (1-1.5 hr)
Bed 6-6:30

Sounds ideal, huh?  You can't blame me for dreaming! =)

Hello ladies.

I am back from holiday.  DS took 2 naps a day while away.  However, our first day back she refused nap 2 again!  I thought she'd at least need one catch up day from being away but I guess I was wrong!  So, in one last effort to retain 2 naps I am going from 3.5 to 4 hour A time.  Maybe I'll get another good month out of her before the final switch!  Here is what I did today:

6:30- wake
7:00- got her out of crib
11- nap, she went right to sleep
12- wake
4- nap, went to sleep within 5 minutes
4:30- I plan to wake her
7:30- bed, and hopefully she will sleep until 7 tomorrow morning

What do you think?  It is only 13 hours of sleep a day, but we are at least retaining two naps.  I don't know what else to try. She woke up on her own after one hour today so I thought it meant she was rested enough, so I doubted I could get her back to sleep.  I hope she will go to bed ok at 7:30, we will have to see.  Hopefully the 30 minute nap leaves her a bit tired.  And I figured a bit less nighttime sleep was worth it if we could get two naps out of her.  In about a month she will probably want more A time so I will go with 11:30-11:45ish at that time, then even if she only sleeps 1.5 then she will make it to a 6pm bedtime at least instead of 5 pm!

I welcome your advice!

my LO is only about 8 months old so I am waaaay far from switching yet, just trying to prepare my self LOL   :D Currenty he takes 2 naps and usually the AM nap is longer than the PM nap. should I try to change this? should the PM nap be the longer one? Or should I just sit back and see how things progress on thier own? What is the next step from here?  ???

Laura - hope the good naps/nights continue!!

newmum - thanks for the 1 hr. 15 clarification...  makes sense that it could be OT if that's the only nap in the day.  My dd sometimes does an hour fifteen for one of her TWO naps, which is where I was confused.

We've had an okay couple of days.  Her A time is varying greatly, though.  I had been trying to extend A time since she had been fighting the p.m. nap tooth and nail, even refusing it for a few days.  This morning, though, she woke about 6:15 and went down for a.m. nap at 9:10.  Up at 10:20.  She is usually ready for her a.m. nap after a shorter amount of A time, so I didn't worry much about that.

But after all the bucking the p.m. nap, today she was yawning and ready for p.m. nap at 1:30 (3 hrs A time) but was waking/stirring just 45 minutes later, although she stayed in crib and rested for another 15 minutes.  Seems I may need to push her to stay awake longer (if only 15 minutes or so?) even if she's showing signs of being ready to sleep?  She got to sleep tonight at 7:10 p.m. (5 hrs A time) and not a peep since.  She's been sleeping all night most nights, usually for 11.5 hrs.

Thoughts?
Amy

Amy--My only thought is to try pushing the morning nap back a bit more.  I take the kids on a walk (they are in the stroller) before the nap and that keeps DS in a calm mood, but awake...for what it's worth.

Hi Guys,

Can I please join in!

My LO turned 1 yr on 10 Oct and since then has gone a bit loopy with her naps!

Last couple of nights she wakes up in the night just talking but is awake for 1-1.5 hours then still wakes up at 6am - she goes down for her am nap at 9:30am and today slept for 2 hours but only because she was up 1:30-3am!  I have put her down for her pm nap btu she is fighting it like yesterday when she had no sleep at all in the pm, she used to sleep 1-1.5 hours from 2:30-3:30/4pm.

I don't know what to do.  I dont think she's ready to extend her am awake time by much as she is up for 3.5 hours and is on the go the whole time.  I read the BW book and I am confused with the transition - if you extend the am awake what do you do with the pm nap - does this get later too???

I think she is teething too and trying to walk which doesnt help things.  She might just be going through a phase with no pm nap, she copes pretty well and is in bed by 6:30pm - we don't have a meltdown she just gets hyper and I feel cheated out of my ME time :)  I have left her chatting away in her cot so I can have a cup of coffee, yesterday I left her in there for 1 hour but she is quite happy but I feel guilty, am I being a mean mother???

Arrrrgh!
