Changing Formula
« on: October 23, 2007, 20:20:51 pm »
DD's been on Enfamil Lactofree for the past few months. Regular formula made her pretty gassy/upset tummy so our dr suggested this. It seems to have improved. I wanted to try and test her on Gentlease to see if she can tolerate any Lactose yet. How do I go about that? Should I mix a half and half bottle or just do the whole thing Gentlease?

I would start slow, maybe even less than half/half.  When I switched my lo, I had the best luck with only doing an ounce or two at a time.  Some babies will get upset tummy just from switching formulas, so go as slowly as you can so that you have a better idea if it is in fact the lactose or just the switch that is causing any reactions.

I agree, with Lyn.  Did your doc want you to try the normal formula again or was it just you want to see if she can handle it?

with my DS i used to give him lactose-free Enfamil for like 6 months. Then my ped suggested that i started to give him one feed a day of the regular Enfamil. And i did and the transition little by little. And it worked quite well. Good luck

My ped told me to just do a switch all at once, BUT i would not do that.  I would take it slow like the others said.  If she is doing a 6 oz. bottle, I would do maybe 2 oz. gentlease and then 4 oz. Lactose Free for a day and then 3 oz./3 oz. the next day and then 4 oz. and 2oz. the next and so on.

The Gentlease only has 1/4 of the normal lactose than regular formula, so you know if she can't handle that little bit, she want be able to handle any at all.

Oh and just FYI, the Gentlease gave my lo poos that smelled like rotten eggs.  May just have been him because he cannot tolerate milk at all, but I asked my friend about it and her lo's ones poos smelled really bad with it.

Good Luck

Hi there - just to echo the comments from others who suggested taking it slow....I had to change formula with my DD and the Dr recommended doing it very slowly - 1 oz at a time - I had good results from that.  ....a sudden change can result in a bad reaction, just from the change - then you don't know for sure if they're not tolerating the new formula or if the reaction is just from too much too soon.  Good luck!
