He climbed out of his crib
« on: October 24, 2007, 21:18:34 pm »
Well, I wasn't planning on moving my DS to a big boy bed for quite a while, but at nap time today he climbed out of his crib.  DH dropped the mattress down on the floor, on a couple of pieces of wood, but I'm sure that will only buy us a month (maybe  :-\).

DS isn't a great sleeper and usually cries for 1-2 mins when we put him down for naps/bedtime because he doesn't want to stop playing.  I can't imagine what he's going to do if he can get out and go around his room.  I'm going to have to empty it!  We haven't even ordered a bed yet, but I guess I'll have to get on that.

Has anyone with a REALLY busy LO got a successful transition story or some advice?

Sari,

As you know Colin is very spirited. The BBB transition went VERY well, much better than I had ever hoped actually.  :)

Jessica, did Colin fight bedtime to begin with?  That's mostly what I'm concerned about.  He hates bedtime (wants to keep playing) but once he's in the crib he has no choice.  Once there's nothing to keep him in.....  :-\ :-\

My DD never got out of bed on her own until she was 4yo, she always called for us.  I harbour no illusions that DS will do that  :P

At first, no, nothing was any different than it ever was  :o  :o  I was expecting armageddon, but it was the easiest thing ever.  It wasn't until a few weeks or maybe a month later that he started objecting a little. When he does, he waits until we've left the room and then he gets up and comes running down the hall giggling  ::)  A couple weeks of silently but emphatically putting him back to bed solved that.

I also found that it became even more important to make sure that he's READY to go to bed. He does the running down the hall thing now when he's just not quite ready yet, not so much as a game.

I'll be watching this thread closely, we have just moved my DD to the BGB and i have to say it's terrible.  She is a spritied child who has always has a really hard time falling asleep and it's no difference in the bed, only worse.

:'( :'( :'( looks like we are in the same boat. I am so tired -- i truly haven't slept in 2 weeks now. I don't know how to do this and i'm too damn old not to be getting a full night's sleep! I tried putting the mattress on the floor last night and he just keeps coming into my bed. Now,honestly, if he owuld just go to sleep I would be happy, but he wants the lights on and he wants to play and watch tv and fall asleep on to of me. Not working.

I'm off to read every single thread on transitioning. If you have any advice or found anything helpful let me kow and  I'll let you know if I find anything.

Do you shut the door? Can your kids open the door?

DD sometimes gets out of bed, but can't get out of her room.  I have found her asleep on the floor several times at nap time.

They usually fall asleep eventually!

We've always shut the door -- but not lock it.  If fact, when he climbs out and leaves the room, he closes the door behind him.  :P

We haven't tried the crib tent, but if he doesn't do well in the bed, we might have to.

Sari - I hope you don't mind me piggy backing on your post. You can do the same on mine if you like.

I haven't tried the tent b/c I have a sleigh crib and it doesn't work on that type.

No problem Rosey.  It seems we have the same problem except my DS is a few months younger.  Good luck with the toddler bed tonight.

2 words--crib tent.  I swear, it is really working for us.  I think we have a sleigh bed too, and I ordered one from BabiesRus that DH got to fit on without too much trouble.  Let me see if I can find it...  http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2404625.  Hmm, for some reason, it's not letting me type in the web address, but it''s called the crib tent 2 with inside surround net, and I ordered it online.  Hope that helps some! :)

Thought I'd add that I'm using a sleep sack.  She is better with it, doesn't seem to get out of bed much, though I know she can - maybe it's too much trouble.

Might be worth a try

Well, I'm thinking maybe we'll order the bed, set it up so he is used to it being in his room AND get a crib tent for the time being.  I just don't think he's ready (or I'm ready) for him to be in a bed.  I switched DD at 22 mos with no issues, but he is a totally different kid than she was!

How long have you had your crib tent Jen?  Sounds like it must be working well for you.
