3 year old with sleep issued *help*
« on: October 25, 2007, 02:37:53 am »
Hi, my name is Alicia and I am the mom of 2 wonderful girls. My oldest is 3 1/2 and has been having some sleep issues for the last 6 months or so. Up until then she was a fabulous sleeper. She always goes to bed at 8am sharp and has the same bedtime routine. It has changed slightly through the years to include potty time and books but basically the same. She is great about staying in bed too. Our issue is her waking in the night. There are some nights she sleeps straight through 8pm-8am and others when she gets up 2-3 times screaming for us. Usually it is for some silly reason like she can't find her stuffed animal or she wants to color(at 3am ?). It is really getting frustrating for my husband and I to deal with. We feel like we have a newborn again. I can't find any links between bad or good nights and I'm not sure what to do about it. Does anyone have any ideas?   ??? ~A

Does she still nap? What do you do when she wakes at the moment... how do you respond to her?

We have this problem too!  Sticker charts don't really work I don't think...  look forward to hearing more ideas!  We also have a newborn, plus another in the middle... my two girls are supposed to share a room, but we've separated them for the moment as everybody was just getting way too tired!

Agree Denise, the sticker chart works for maybe 2 days then not again for the next 3 or 4. Am actually going to take dds down off her wall today, though I am sure she will go mad when she sees it gone. I think it's over stimulation from school for us so think am going to cut out one day. Have done a post on that too. Gosh I will be here all day today as I have a few more to do too....... :)

Yeah ours could be overtiredness too - she started kindergarten 3 afternoons per week in July... trying to think whether the nw started at the same time??  No, actually I remember they were happening before too, as I was worried how she was going to cope with kindy with the tired state she was in... hmmm.   :-\  Now she is in bed super early, but since daylight savings time has started her room is rather light at bedtime (between 6-6.30pm) and she often plays with the soft toys in her room before going to sleep too.

It's good to know I'm not the only one out there.

She doesn't nap on a regular basis. On the days that we have a lot going on she usually puts herself down for a nap in the late afternoon. She sais "I need a nap" and usually sleeps for over an hour. On days that we stay home and it isn't too busy she doesn't though.

At first when she got up we would go in and comfort her and put her back to sleep. It only usually takes retucking her in and a quick kiss. As the time has gone by we have gotten more frustrated and I have to admit there are nights when I get angry and yell at her. Especially when she is screaming histarically about wanting to color or some other nonsense. I know that isn't productive but at 3am sometimes it's hard to control yourself.

We too have a baby that I am also thinking about. She is 8 months and in a room down the hall. Usually she isn't interupted but sometimes she is. I wanted them to share a room at some point but not if the waking continues.

I am wondering what you think causes this? Could it be a diet thing? I am at a loss. ~A

Alicia,

I saw your post on the dummy/paci... so it could be that as well

With the night time requests... we have one phrase & thats all she gets when she wakes at night "its night time... go to sleep.. mummy's going back to her bed to sleep". She might also come up with requests... milk, put the blinds up, get Jasmine into my bed ???, etc... although she hasn't gone to the point where she will scream if I say no to her. Try to stay away from yelling at her or displaying negative emotions cause -ve attention is better than none....

Does she have a night light? Do you think that would help her?

I am not sure if it could be her diet? I dont really know much about that....
