soaking wet diapers
« on: October 26, 2007, 11:30:05 am »
My ds and dd are 13 months old. Lately they've been waking in the morning with soaking wet diapers, usually an hour before wake time. The diapers are so wet that their pj's are wet, too. I have been changing ds and putting him back down to sleep. It takes him up to an hour sometimes to finally snooze again, getting up later than normal wake time. Dd usually falls back to sleep after a few minutes, and I don't realize she is soaked until I pick her up at normal wake-up time. I'm wondering if they are taking in too much milk in the pm. They are still getting two bottles of milk, and milk at meals.

Routine:
6:30 wake
7:00 breakfast (cereal, fruit and milk-about 2 oz?)
10:00 nap (30 min)
10:30 snack (cheese, cheerios, cut-up fruit)
12:30 lunch (veggies, fruit, pasta/ rice, meat, milk- 2 oz)
1:30 nap (1.25-1.5 hr)
3:30 snack (5-6 oz milk)
5:30 dinner (veggies, fruit, pasta/rice, meat, milk-2-3 oz)
7:15 bedtime bottle (6 oz milk)
7:30 asleep

Sounds like an adequate amount to me, but could be wrong.  Any chance you could try the next size up nappy for more absorbancy?

I agree, your milk amount sounds right. I have this problem too though and my dd is 23 months and she drinks a LOT of water. You can try going up a diaper size - it may help for a while, or changing both before you go to bed at night (w/o switching on lights) or even putting a pad in the nappy - can't say I've tried this - I also find she leaks in different places according to how she sleeps. Hope somebody has a better cure for us!

It does seem like they drink a lot late in the day. I think I would give them their milk snack at 10.30 am instead, and give them the food snack at 3.30 pm. Or do you do it that way in case the milk earlier in the day affects their appetities for solids?

We had this problem too.  I switched to Huggies Overnighters and still change ds's diaper before I go to bed about 80% of the time.  Otherwise, he'll be soaked in the morning too.  :-\   Sorry that's not very encouraging.

Try the next size up and that may fix your problems.  Good luck!

I agree with going up a size in diapers. I might also recommend putting a plastic diaper cover over the diaper (I've just started doing this).  It will keep any leaking inside the diaper and won't interrupt your los sleep as I think it is usually the wet clothing turning cold that makes them uncomfortable and wakes them.

With my 17mo I was getting alot of this recently & rather than give her the final bottle just before she goes to sleep I give it to her about 1hr before & I have now introduced a snack just before bedtime instead (like yoghurt). She is on the largest nappy size there is (huggies junior) & then next size up is the pull ups which didn't really work too well & she would still leak through (possibly b/c they were too big). So yes you can try next size up or just try to limit the amount of fluids at the end of the day :).

Just before she is down for the night I put a fresh nappy on her (that does mean though that I use up one more nappy in a day as she will have a nappy put on her after bath & then just before she goes to sleep).

Just a thought
Layla
