10mo weaning - what to do next?
« on: October 29, 2007, 19:25:59 pm »
Hi there

What to do... what to do... what to do....???

My ds is 10mo and been trying to wean him onto a bottle now for the last four days.  It's been tough but he's been taking it.  The first few days he took 100mls ebm mid-morning and 100mls formula mid-afternoon + only lunch as solids.  The last few days he's been having approx 100mls (inc. bit spilled over me and him) then refusing all day and at bedtime.  I'm really worried as he's got a milk protein allergy and so i'm paranoid he's not getting enough calcium.  This evening he refused constantly and started falling asleep without milk again.. i got worried and so bf him.  I'm not sure what to do now... back to bf, or perservere with the bottles.  He started nursery today - just 30mins - so wanted him to have the option of a bottle at 2:30 if he wanted it.  Our current routine is as follows:

7:00am wake, feed (ravenous)
8:00am breakfast - usually dry cereal, toast and sometimes lets me feed him some fruit puree
9:15am nap
10:00am wake and snack + water
11:45am lunch (large meal + pudding)
12:30pm nap
2:00-2:30 wake and try to feed but often refuses... so another snack and milk in cup, soya yogurt
4:00pm dinner, ligher than lunch... often fussy
6:30 bath, story, milk and in bed for 7:00pm

Not sure what to do for the best

Appreciate your thoughts
Hema

What kind of formula are you trying? If you know he has a milk protein allergy then you may want to chat on bottle-feeding or food allergies to get people's experiences of hypoallergenic formulas.

Would he take it from a sippy if not a bottle?

What kind of timescale are you thinking?

He'll take ebm happily out of a cup but not formula  :-\   I know he doesn't like the taste but worried that 100mls daily just isn't enough.  Started nursery today but i'm not back at work until Jan so have until then... i'll post in the allergies bit about getting him to take the formula - i've heard wysoy is horrible, smells better than normal formula though!  Thanks for replying  :)

There are formulas available which aren't soy but where the milk proteins are processed in a specific way - I'm not sure whether they do follow-on versions though.

You can also try mixing the ebm and formula and gradually increasing the amounts of formula over time so he gets used to it. And soon he can take cow's milk too (ask your doctor when) which he might prefer the taste of.

People do combine working with breastfeeding morning and night at this age but you might want to wean for other reasons too which is fair enough.

to be honest i'd be happy to feed morning and night but getting lots of pressure from my in-laws/parents/dh  :(  Driving me up the wall!!  I know i shouldn't let them get to me and just want to do the best for ds... iykwim.     Cow and Gate do a comfort milk that's whey based - tried already; and also pepti-junior thats an elemental feed.... i've got a sample tin from a dietician friend at work so i may try that.  I've heard it's pretty foul too, but we'll be positive and up-beat about it and see how it goes!!

Your samuel looks like a lovely cheeky chappie x
