How long is EBM good for when taken out of the fridge?
« on: October 31, 2007, 01:54:37 am »
Hi, I know that EMB freshly pumped in a sealed container can stay good for up to 8 hours at room temp - but what if you pump it, put it straight in the fridge then take it out later? E.g. at midnight I take a bottle of EBM out of the fridge (pumped that day and immediately refridgerated) and leave it in a rubber bottle warmer by the bed. When my baby wakes at between 5 or 6am it's at room temperature and I can feed her straight away.

I also take refridgerated bottles in warmers with me when I go out. Nothing has ever smelt off, but I can't find anything on the internet that gives an approximate timing for EBM immediately refridgerated then taken out!

Just marking my spot....would like the same answer!!
I thought it was only a few/couple hours after you warm it up????   not sure though.

Freshly refridgerated that day is pretty much considered the same as fresh ebm.

If it's being kept in an electric bottle warmer which is switched on immediately and quite toasty warm - I'd say no more than 3-4 hours based on all the other figures (i.e it would probably go into the 'warm room figures' [79F/ 25c].

If you take it out of the fridge and don't warm it very much and the temperature change is very gradual and it stays below 20 degrees centigrade I'd say you could go 10 hours plus. They say 10 hours for below 22c/72f. Those few degrees do seem to make quite a difference to bacteria.

So depending on how your bottle warmer works and assuming it's very gradual warming for most of that time it will probably be below that threshold if not entirely. So I'd say what you are describing is fine.

Thanks so much, all sounds ok then.  its just a rubber wine cooler type thing really so the warming would be pretty gradual.

I used to pump first thing in the morning, put the EBM in the fridge, take it out at bedtime and leave the bottle by the window overnight.  DH would give that bottle to DD first thing in the morning - it was their special time together.

Never ever had a problem.  And she took it at room temperature, which was much more convenient too!

If in any doubt, I used to just taste a little.  If it tasted ok to me, I figured it's fine!
