Not interested in his bottle...
« on: November 02, 2007, 20:42:53 pm »
Well its been about a month now and my lo (3.5 months old) still isnt very interested in his bottle. It starts with him drinking about 4oz with no problems but then its like hes bored or nosey or something. It is a struggle to get anymore into him. With patience and continuously trying i can usually get 5oz into him and on the odd occasion 6oz.
He isnt gasy or windy in anyway...no reflux and i have had a DR check and no infections or illnesses.I have tried a larger nipple on his bottle which makes him drink faster but never anymore then before i changed the size.He gets anywhere from 20 to 30 oz...depends on the day.He is happy, pleasant, growing and has lots of dirty diapers and except for a few sleep issues(which we are working on...lol)he seems fine.

So i guess my question is should i be worried or should i just go with his flow?
Maybe hes not hungry enough after 3 hours...maybe its time to change to a 3.5 hour easy?

Hi there, I would def try for the 3.5 hr EASY, and if this does not change things, then you may just have to go with the flow, he may just be a baby who does not drink LOADS of milk, 20-30oz is respectable, and there is a wide range of normal.  It sounds like he is doing great as you said, so I wouldnt worry.

Try 3.5 hours between feeds if he can do it, and see how it goes  :)

Keep us posted, hope it goes well, if not well, try not to worry too much if he seems well, happy etc.... and if you do get concerned you can ask your doc for reassurance z

My LO never seemd to take more than about 25oz per day even when his weight suggested he should be having well over 30oz. We moved to a 4 hour EASY when he was about 12 weeks as he just wasn't interested in 3 hour feedings.

As long as he is gaining weight and has plenty of wet and dirty nappies it sounds like he is taking what he needs - babies seem to be good at self-regulating!

HTH!

Thats for the encouragement. We are up now and first morning feed went not bad...he drank 5oz before the squirming and chewing on the nipple started.I am going to wait 3.5 for the first time today. We had some sleep issues that were due to hunger so i hope changing it doesnt start those all over again. But all i can do is give it a try. Will let you know tonight how it went.

Well our first day on a 3.5 hour easy was no problem. He didnt cry for food or wake up during the night. He is still squirming with his bottle but all day he drank 5.5 and 6 oz per feed and no 4oz feeds so he had almost 30 oz today which is great.Of course this was only day one...lol...we will see how the next few days go.
Fingers crossed!!

Thanks Christina

Try this link too.  This is such a common age to have feeding "issues."

I have a non eating 4 month old, he was also a non eating 3 month old.Ethan was and currently is the exact same as you described. They go throught these weeks and then they come out of them after they make a big developmental leap.  If you google "wonder weeks" and infant you will find lots of information about these developmental weeks and why they stop eating. It is normal and even though I have the book and read the info, I even need some reminding sometimes (from my husband). The book is excellent and based on years of research. Hope this helps ;D

Had the same problem...at the same time. SO I changed to 3.5 - 4 hour EASY, slowly my reading his cues, we were on 4hr easy in no time. Except for GS...they suck.
