The best gift after baby
« on: October 02, 2007, 01:33:00 am »
I was told I should read Tracy's book by my pediatricians assistant.  My pediatrician, as wonderful a doctor as he is, he had always told me that my 6 month old (at that time) sons napping would be eratic and unpredictable until he grew out of it.  I left the doctors office the day the book was recommended and went to the library to get it first thing.  I read it within that week and put Tracy's ideas into practice.  Starting with a naptime and bedtime routine.  I thought about what kind of person I am and what I can handle without straying from Tracy's advice.  I decided to observe him to see when he truly got tired after waking up at 6:30 a.m.  I was shocked to see that he'd start showing signs as soon as an hour after waking.  I always waited until long after that.  I suppose that's why he never took a nap longer than 30-45 minutes.  So when he started getting tired, just an hour after waking and breakfast, I took him into his room and turned on a soft lullaby cd and rocked him.  I watched the clock and it only took him 5 minutes to fall asleep.  I must admit, I have let him fall asleep while rocking, but as soon as he's just gotten to sleep I lay him in his crib.  I've never been a fan of cry it out, but had tried it a time or two, but couldn't shake the feeling it was wrong.  I didn't knew for sure what his cries meant.  Now at 9 months I can tell what his cries mean.  Especially if it's the difference between a "mom, I don't want to go to sleep, I need more wind down" or a "mom, I hurt/am hungry/am uncomfortable and can't sleep until you help me with this".  The day he went down for his nap within 5 minutes he slept for 2 hours.  He has been doing pretty much the same since.  At night we started a cereal, bath, bottle, music, rocking routine that works great for all of us.  He falls asleep quickly usually and doesn't wake until around 12 hours later.  I know this change has to be due to The Baby Whisperer as they were so sudden after reading the book and practicing the methods.  The Baby Whisperer has changed my life and my relationship with my son and even my husband.  I thank everyone who is operating this site and everyone who has been such a help.  I don't want to think where we'd be without all of you.

I'm so glad you found us and that you found Tracy's work to be so helpful. She loved helping babies and their parents; she'd be so pleased to know how happy you are.
