Blood in milk, anything to worry about?
« on: November 08, 2007, 16:05:16 pm »
When I pumped this afternoon, blood came out of one of my breasts - to the point that I stopped pumping.  Does that ever happen to anyone? I've heard of it happening in the beginning but I am bf-ing for almost 10 months now.

One thing, ds got one of his top teeth this week and bit me last night while bf-ing. (OUCH). I don't know if this has anything to do with it ???  It did hurt but there are no lacerations, marks, or anything visible. So I thought it might have done something internally??

Breasts are filled with tons of delicate blood vessels and it's not hard to rupture them. Obviously when nipples are cracked it's more obvious but little internal blood vessels can be broken without any obvious signs.
Most of the time mothers don't even realize as their baby simply continues to feed and only pumping reveals it.

If you are just talking about pinkish and streaked milk then I would guess it would fit with your biting theory (pumps can also sometimes be a bit brutal on sensitive breast tissue) and I wouldn't worry. If blood was literally pouring or if you have any other symptoms that worry you I would chat to a doctor.

Emma - that was the reassurance I was hoping for. Normal feedings seem to otherwise be going fine, it just freaked me out to see blood in my milk stream!
Thanks a lot. :-*
