Allergies... need some help.
« on: November 13, 2007, 01:37:49 am »
Hi Ya'll!

My ds has an egg allergy, he can eat well baked eggs like in most prepackaged frozen foods, (waffles/pancakes etc.) however he can not eat an egg, or cakes due to the extra egg whites... his face breaks out in hives and he becomes itchy and lethargic.  We also noticed not to long ago that while eating chicken with a Teriyaki glaze, he developed hives, and became very itchy, the reaction was just like it is with the eggs, the funny thing is is that it use to be his favorite meal and he had never had a reaction before.  Anyway, yesterday we had a hard time getting him to eat, so for dinner we made him mini waffles, with a banana, and a teaspoon of light syrup, and all of a sudden boom, his face became all red and blotchy, and he started to cry about being itchy where the syrup had touched his skin which was red and blotchy as well.  Mind you he always eats waffles/pancakes and we've never had this happen... we checked the ingredients, and would you believe soybeans???  Not to mention there is soy in the waffles too.  Could he be allergic to soy?  (we did try him once on a soy based formula due to , but it only got 100 times worse within a fews days of being on that kind of formula)   I have called his doctor and they say they usually do not do allergy test until 2????  He's almost 21 months!  We also have reintroduced corn into his diet, (he use to hate it) and both the days he's had corn, he has woken up with a very upset tummy, on Saturday night I must have changed his huggies 10 times within an hour and a half.  Again tonight we made homemade vegetable soup with corn which he loves, and within an hour or so of going to bed, he was up and crying that he had "poops again"!  6 times I had to change his huggies.  That is the only thing my dh and I can come up with.  I don't believe he has an allergy per say, but what about an intolerance to corn??  GRRRR, we are so worried, it seems that he's had such a tough time as of late with food issues, and we are so careful!  Has anyone else gone through anything like this?

Thanks for the help!

My son has atopic eczema and multiple food allerges. With some of his allergies his eczema flares and he gets hives. Other cause a puffy face and lips followed by stomach pain and yucky nappies. Some food cause all of these symptoms. My son has now developed a severe food aversion due to the amount of reactions he has had to food. Just before this happened he seemed to be reacting to more and more foods which we had thought were safe. My son had RAST tests at 11 months first of all and this gave us a guide to his major allergies and once we had eliminated these it was easy to pinpoint other foods he was reacting to as once over his eczema was so bad it was hard to tell when he was reacting to something.

I would ask again about having allergy tests done as this will hopefully at least give you a starting point to work from.

If you want to ask anything else please do not hesitate.

Hi,

Did the syrup have corn syrup in it?  My lo is sensitive to corn, she becomes incontinent as she does with strawberries, and apples all in any form do.  If you look at corn allergies many many preservatives and additives can be made with corn, like citric acid ect.  So it could definitely be the corn.  There is an allergy test you can have done at I think 18 mos, it is different than what they do at the conventional doctors office.

I am also wondering about Gluten sensitivity with mine, just need to buckle down and do it, b/c she still has loose bowels and lttle bumps on her skin, so made me think could it be gluten?  Did you use flour to thicken you soup, and I think there is gluten in a lot of carmel coloring which would be in the syrup?.  Hope you find something that helps soon.

Hi S!  Well here we are again, and his tummy isn't really any better, I did notice there was mucus in his poo this morning!  So I called the Dr., and they are going to see him tomorrow.  As for the syrup, it does have High Fructose Corn Syrup, Caramel Coloring, and Citric Acid!  WOW!  So maybe.  I am going to ask the Dr. about doing some test.  It's funny you mentioned little bumps on your LO's skin.  My son had bumps on his chest and tummy... makes me wonder!!  Thank you so much!  You have opened my eyes, and I think I am going to be doing a lot of research!  But could you please tell me about your LO's 'bumps'??  Thank you a million times over!  xoxoxox

Her bumps feel almost like really dry skin.  They are on the side of her legs and arms and on her face.  Here is a better description ://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratosis_pilaris someone else on here told me about.  If it is corn, remember to look at ingredients on everything, almost all boxed crackers and cookies and even flavored yogurt.  For a while I only gave her rice cakes, the plain ones, good thing she like it, especially with nut better.  At the health food store alot of the gluten free cookies and crackers don't have corn but alot of them do.  It is exhausting, but so is your lo being sick, so worth it.  By the way, I don't think all citric acid is made from corn, BUT it can be.  We have been trying to get to just eating whole foods, I know it is better for us, but not nearly as convenient, and you have to constantly be watching other people, they just don't think.  I am no expert in this area, but I will help as much as I can.  Also that ALCAT test that I put a link to, I think that they send you a rotation diet with foods you can have, I have some friends that did it, b/c the traditional allergy test are not always reliable.

HI, I'm not sure where you are from, but I wasn't aware of any age limit on allergy testing. My lo was first tested at around 6 months after a severe reaction to formula. I would see another doctor for a different opinion and really push for what you want. I had to do that for his eczema, as I kept being told it was cradle cap which would disappear, but eventually got a referral to the specialist.

Well, my dh is going with us so that way we can really push for something to be done.  He has had too many reactions for it to be a coincidence.  And if we are not able to get somewhere, then we will be looking for a new dr.!  His tummy can not cont. get upset like this.   :(  Can't wait until tomorrow!   (we're in Florida, USA)  S- I plan on really sitting down and going to all the posts you sent me tonight when he's sleeping, and while I get a 'list' together to take to the Dr.!  xxx

Good idea! Just remember Dr's are just ordinary people with a few qualifications and a white coat! Your son is the one who matters most. Go for it! GOOD LUCK!

Thank you I will!  This is not the first time I've had to push to get something accomplished.  I like them but over here it's almost like the Dr. listen more to the insurance co. than they do the mom's who KNOW their children!

Unfortunately we have the sameproblems in the UK within the NHS. The doctors seem to take the cheapest route so that it costs the NHS less. We are still trying to get to the bottom of my sons issues.

Good luck and I hope you get to the bottom of things soon.

Well, we had another upset tummy at 2 AM, and it took until 5 AM before he went back to sleep, and was back up at 5:45 AM!  We saw the Dr., and she did NOTHING... we did get our referral, but that was all.  She did say that there was a bug going around, and then sent us on our way.  So no answers, I'm going to call the Allergist this morning, and hopefully we can get in before Thanksgiving... wishful thinking!  :)   I am so tired I just to scream!!!!  xoxox

So sorry your lo is sick.  Sorry for him and for you.  My lo got really sick around 10mos with diarrhea, but we had been camping and the water levels were low, so they had me get a stool sample to rule out EColi, which they said there was ecoli, ( not the deadly kind) but I guess everyone has it at some level? But had diarrhea for about 10 days.   Anyway they didn't do anything.  Just watch her.  It was very scary.  Honestly her poop has always been loose, since then.  I am going to start giving her acidopholous, maybe get things more balanced and since I just found out about the additives possibly having corn in them, I am going to try a while of just homemade food, to see if that helps.  Do you think he could've gotten a bug on top of his allergies.  Is he lethargic or dehydrated?  I hope you get help for him soon.

Hey s!  Ecoli uhh?  It's funny that you say that b/c no too long ago we bought frozen hamburger which did upset all our tummys, then a few weeks later that product was recalled over Ecoli contamination!  But wouldn't he have had symptoms prior to this?  He seems to be acting fine, maybe a little crankier, but probably due to lack of sleep.  And he's had nothing but water to drink.  I  did call the Allergist, and we see them on the 26th.  After Thanksgiving, but at least it's not weeks and weeks out.  We are really thinking about switching Dr.'s though, we were so rushed we forgot to mention numerous things, and this is not the first time.... what are acidopholous?  Is it something like probiotics?  We are being SUPER careful what we are feeding him.... and very time consuming, frustrating, and HARD!  But I'll do what I need to to help him feel better!   :(

Yes, aciddopholous is a probiotic.  My great niece had constipation problems and it helped her, but it is known to help diarrhea.  It balances the good stuff in your digestive tract.
I am going to pm you about the ecoli.
