Eggplant/Swede, canola oil....burning skin?
« on: November 16, 2007, 01:18:30 am »
Jake had some eggplant (swede) sauteed in canola oil. Parts of his face turned bright red. I rubbed it on my hand and it burned! He loved the swede though and ate three big slices of it and then chose more of it instead of pie. I am worried that it burns his skin. :-\  Was it the swede or the oil?

Sorry am a bit confused.  :-[ :-\   Do you mean aubergine / eggplant that you sliced up into big round disks and pan fried?  Or do you mean swedes as in the turnip family?

You use the word burn?  Do you mean more red and rashy, blotchy or some hives?

Do you have any allergies, it is weird your hand turned red too?

Aubergine/eggplant is in the nightshade family and many experience allergies to these fruits/veg in that family.  Canola oil is from rape seed/pollen so there are some people that experience allergic reactions like hay fever and other symptoms. If it was swede/turnip, I don't think that is a high allergy food, more guilty of casing wind!  :P

Sorry not much help, but need more info. How old is Jake, does he have any other food allergy  or intolerances?

It could be an allergic reaction. I am also confused as to whether it was aubergine (egg plant) or swede. The best way to find out if it was the vegetable or oil is to offer them seperately. With the oil you will need to use it with something that your ds as had before without a problem.

DUH! I was afraid I got the UK term mixed up! I was so sure I remembered it correctly that I did not check. It was Aubergine.  :-[I am having a kinesiologist here on Tuesday and I will have her check. I guess it could be either one. And yes, it burned my hand and turned it red too. Yes, history of allergies. Jake did not seem bothered by it, but turned red. I will let you know when I find out. In the meantime I need to buy some new cooking oil just in case. Thanks for the help. I wanted to know if an allergy to either one was common.

Incidently, do Tomatoes belong to a particular "family"? It is Jake's worst allergy.

Yup, tomato is in the nightshade category as well.

My dd2 gets red blotches wherever eggplant touches her face... a shame b/c she too LOVED it.

Thanks Rachel, that helps me, I am not going to worry about the oil. I was eating eggplant today and noticed my throat burning so I am pretty sure it is the culprit. I already had to give up mushrooms, onions, garlic, tomatoes. Now eggplant. I have no good food left. :'(

Oh bless!  Yes, my sister can't go anywhere near tomatoes or their leaves for that matter, hive city!  Not sure if she has probs with eggplant/aubergine, have to ask her.

Best,
