Confusion over which breast
« on: November 24, 2007, 12:57:13 pm »
Hello, Im the mum of a angel/textbook baby (I think) who is 4 weeks old.  My DS has always fed well and latches on easily.  I'm really confused however about some conflicting advise I got and have read regarding swopping breasts during a feed.  We attended NHS ante natal classes and NCT ones, and as a expecting and new mum I read everything!

Some people said stay on one breast but some to swop him either half way or after a gap for burping etc.  I/ve tried all and tend to change what I do depending on how sleepy he is . i.e. if I need to wake him up I wind him and swop breasts.  Not sure what to do really.

Also after a while his suck 'type' changes.  Rather than a big obvious gulp he almost just 'tongues' the nipple.  When I check he is still using his jaw and not uncomfortable for me, so I assumed he was still latched on ok and perhaps the milk had changed to the more fatty one or something?
Any advise much appreciated
Linds xx

Hi Linds

It is very important for your ds to get the 'hind' milk when you are feeding him.  This is the milk that fills him up.  You talk about your son "gulping" this would be when he is drinking the fore milk.  It is the thirst quenching thin milk which he gets when he first latches on.  The change in his sucking would be when he is getting hind milk.  This is the thick milk which fills him up & fattens him up.

When he seems to be finished a feed or when you think your breast is empty, offer him the second breast.  He only needs to feed from one breast a feed.  He should get everything he needs but offer him the other breast in case he is still hungry.

You are more than welcome.  It is a huge learning curve.  I am still learning alot about babies now that I didn't know when my dd was a baby.  This forum is a wealth of knowledge so ask away & we will do our best to help you out.
