Consistent 45 min waking after 3am feed
« on: November 25, 2007, 09:09:52 am »
Hi  :)

Looking for a little bit of input with a consistent NW - think I know the answer but just wanted to check it out with you all.

Callie is 5 weeks now.  She goes to bed at 730/8pm after her feed.  She pretty much goes down drowsy but awake and is settled with some sh's  and lots of wriggling/settling on her own.  She has been waking to feed around midnight and 3am although in the last 1.5 weeks she has had 5 nights of dropping the midnight feed and waking at 3am, and sometimes again around 6am  :)  After feeds she is patted/burped for about 2 minutes and then put back in cot whether she is awake or asleep.  She usually does some wriggling and snorting  ;) and settles down again.  Until about a week ago it was taking about an hour to settle her again but she is doing much better now.

Ok, so the problem ... after the 3am feed (or 4am if she stretches until then) she wakes consistently at 45 minutes   ::).  This morning when she woke DP and I tried to remember what we had been doing to resettle her, but I can't really remember  :-[  When she was taking ages to settle after feeds the awake time seemed to run into each other LOL and I think we ended up back at feed time, so she was fed.  The last couple of nights I have just left her fussing/falling back asleep and given her a few sh's - sometimes sucessfully, sometimes not.  I have stayed awake to sh her through on occasion too but most often she wakes up.

Some day naps are 45 mins and some are 2 hours.  She goes into cot awake or awake but drowsy and settles herself with sh'ing or sometimes without.  We haven't yet addressed the 45 min ones as DD1 is about and I don't want to spend anymore time sleep training at the moment.

SO ... after all of that ... how do I address the 45 min night waking?  Is it common etc?  I am guessing that she is just a bit less tired at this waking and is therefore waking easier.  Should I stay up and sh her thru for a few nights?  Is this likely to work if I am not addressing 45 min naps during the day?  Last night I offered her my finger to suck which she happily did, so  she is not hungry (obviously  ;)) but just can't stay sleeping/resettle.  She is doing really well at settling during the day/bedtime/other NW's so I'm confused with this one.

Sorry for the novel, just wanted to give plenty of background!!

TIA  :-*

Hi Nicola :)  If she is consistently waking after 45 minutes, I would try w2s if shh isn't working.  Does she only do it after the 3 am feed or does she do this at the midnight feed as well?  Babies tend to be in a much lighter sleep between 4 and 6 am, so maybe she just can't get herself through that 45 minute jolt.

Yup only at the 3am feed, never at any of the others.

It makes sense that you say they are in lighter sleep at that time as even when she does settle she is much noisier etc then.  At the weekends if we are not up for nursery with DD1 she often goes back to sleep after 7am feed and sleeps really soundly again.

I haven't tried sh consistently but I will try it over the next few nights and then use W2S if I have no joy.

Thank you (again!)  :-*

Aww Jess  :) :-* Thank you. I think Callie is due the credit thou, we really are just following her lead on everything. She's just a hunny  :D

Well, she went down at 730pm settled herself with some sh's, up at 230pm settled self, then up at 630am settled self and slept until 830am  :)  She didn't wake at 45 min mark but she was really noisy.  I was half awake half sleeping sh-ing her when she was noisy.  Maybe the slightly earlier wake is better as she is back down before the 4am time?  No idea.

I will keep up the sh's and see how it goes.

Thank you  :-*

Back again ... can I run this past you all  :D

Last night, bedtime 730pm, fed at 330pm straight back down asleep about 415 with a couple of sh's.  Starting making noises about 30 mins later so I sh'd and held legs down until jolts passed.  She slept through them  ;D ;D

However  ::)  about 15 mins after the jolts passed she started to be restless again and I ended up sh'ing her until 6am!  She then slept until 7am, fed and went straight back to sleep.

DP did get up just before she started being restless again, so not sure if he disturbed her or if she is just VERY restless at this time of night?? Any thoughts? Also, should I keep sh'ing her tonight if the same happens? It's an awful long time to be up for although if it does the trick I am happy to stick with it  :)

TIA  :-*

LOL Jess, you psychic!

Was just coming back to add that she had a very windy bum and eventually had a poo!  Totally forgot all about that until this evening.  Funny how we forget what happened during the night!  :-[

Thinking about it now, it's such progress.  2 weeks ago she would have cried and been totally unsettled until that poo was safely out.  Seems to be taking it much more in her stride now  :D
