Anyone tried ALIMENTUM forumula??
« on: November 26, 2007, 22:37:35 pm »
My dr gave me some to try today. dd is on soy formula but is only pooping every 36-48hrs..we're not sure if this is the problem or reflux b/c she is clearly uncomfortable with some other symptoms but we're trying this first before Prilosec.
just wondering if anyone had good results with Alimentum??

Nicole

We used it for both my boys because of their reflux and MPI.   We had great success with it, but it is so expensive!

We had very good success with Alimentum (but only the RTF version, DD reacted badly to the powdered formula). But for a time she also needed reflux meds in addition.

Hey karen,
may I ask what her reactions to the alimentum were? dd has been onit for 48hrs now....
was good yesterday, very gassy today..... not sure.
we susspect she may be lactose intolerant as well since my othe rdd was and my dh is. I just read now that alimentum is milk based...so i'm not sure what to do now....
sigh..we tried soy but she was still fussy. part of the problem is that we dont' KNOW what is bothering her. she has a few of the signs of silent reflux so it may be that too.
anyway, if you could tell me what your dd's reactions were that might help me know what to loook for:) thanks!!

Nicole:  I would personally try Nutramigen.  Alimentum has Sucrose in it.  If your lo has a problem with lactose, then she can also have a problem with sucrose.

There is no lactose in Alimentum.  It is replaced with sucrose for the carbohydrate.

Nutramigen is another Hypoallergenic formula.  It does not have lactose or sucrose in it.  It has corn syrup solids for the carbohydrate.

Like Karen said some little ones cannot handle corn, so the RTF Alimentum work great, but then some can't handle the sucrose, so the Nutramigen works better.

Which soy formula was she on?  Similiac Isomil Soy also has sucrose, but Enfamil Prosobee does not.

Not sure if you want to change again, but I would try the Nutramigen.

Good Luck and keep us posted. Wendy

Hey Wendy, that' s interesting....
she was on the soy isomil....
she is doing well on Alimentum now...we can't try nutramigen b/ c we can't afford it. the govt' program "WIC" only supplies Alimentum with a presription. it would cost us over $200 a  month for the Alimentum but they are paying for it. I hope she cont's to do okay..its been about a week..

Really they want cover Nutramigen. That sucks.. It is the same price.

I know what you mean about the cost.  I just spent $800.00 for 2 months of Elecare for Tyler.  I remember with my first son, I used to spend about $100.00 a week on Nutramigen.
Now he drinks Pediasure and that cost us about $120.00 a month.

Damn my kids are expensive.

I have learned that Nutramegen is a comprised of a milk protien that is broken down into less recognizable parts. Is Alimentum similar is composition?

On another note, we could start a "we love our children" AKA "B--tch" thread about the cost of special formulas. We are on Neocate, amnio acid prescription formula, and choke each time I go to the pharamcy.

Yes, Alimentum is basically the same, although I've been told it has 17% milk protein (broken down) versus 21% in Nutramigen. And Alimentum RTF is corn free as well. DD was only Neocate for a few months too - SO expensive. Can you get insurance to cover it? Sometimes they will (after a fight) with a note from the doctor, etc. You can also find it for less on ebay.
