How much sleep does a 20 month old need??
« on: December 03, 2007, 13:25:14 pm »
Hi all

My LO has one sleep a day at about 12 for 2 hours although sometimes 2 hrs 15 mins.

I've noticed some changes in him lately - I think we're heading for terrible 2's - but also he has been waking up at about 5.20 am and is just very awake.   It's not teething.  Yesterday he did sleep for 2 hrs 30 mins as he had been awake at 5 am but he didn't go off to sleep until 7.30 pm as he was talking away and yet he still woke up early.

When he is teething he wakes up crying but he is just really awake.

Just wondered how much day and night sleep he should have as he heads towards 2.   I know that one of my friends cut the nap down a bit as bedtime was getting difficult.  Should I keep his nap at 2 hours still or should I now be cutting it down a bit?

He is normally awake by 6 am on a good day so don't want to make him overtired.  Just wondered what the pattern will be in this new developement phase.

Thanks
Emma ???

Oh I hope you get an anwser to this question!  I was just wondering the same thing!  Abby gets 12hrs at night 8-8 and a 2hr nap during the day 1-3pm.  But she is taking longer to fall asleep at 1pm.  Sometimes not until 1:30/40.

HUGS!

Normally the average is about 13 hours-usually split by 2 hr nap and 11 hour night. But that is just an average.
Most Toddlers will start cutting down their daytime sleep as they get nearer to two or not take a nap somedays like DD ::).I f he has a nap then i would limit it to 2 hrs max and make sure bedtime is not too late so that he is not getting OT which can cause early waking too.

Hi

Thanks.  This morning's wake up was 5.50 am so a bit better.

I'm also experiencing crying when he goes for his nap now - this goes on for 5 mins then he does go off.

He was put down at 12.15 pm for sleep.   Do you think I should make the nap time a bit later?  Although he does wake up at 6 am so by midday he has been awake 6 hours.

I'd be tempted to move the nap a little earlier (not much just 10-15mins).Could be he is getting a bit too tired due to the early wake up.
