Hey Lyn.  I put some leftovers from the 'Five Bird Roast' that my parents had at Christmas (yuk - I'm veggie!!) into a risotto.  Just chopped it up into chunks (I wore rubber gloves to do that!!) and put it into a mixed veg risotto.  They seemed to really like it.  Unfortunately for me, they seem to love meat at every rare occasion they get it!

As for beans, all three of mine love soya beans.  And they're really easy too.  Straight from the freezer into boiling water for 4 minutes.  In the early days, I'd give them a 'squeeze' (the beans, not the boys) to remove the husk and make them easier to eat.

Cannellini beans heated from a tin (you can get organic ones in plain water rather than salted water) and haricot beans have been popular too but soya beans remain the favourite!

HTH!

Lyn, we haven't actually prepared chicken specifically for Alice, if we're having it in something then we give her wee bits.  She had curried turkey the other night, very mild indeed.  If we're having chicken casserole, then we'll fish out some bits of turkey, or whatever else is in it.  I guess, it's just a matter of trying her out on various different things and see what she'll eat.  I haven't tried Alice on beans yet, sorry no suggestions there.  Alice has had lamb, beef and pork too.  Mainly in casseroles, so they're flavoured in something and very tender.  I need to try making sausages for her.

Is edamame the same as soya beans.  I actually have some in the fridge.  I gave her a few a month or so ago, but it was at the same time she was having the raisin-induced upset belly, so I haven't tried again.  Good thought!

Rubber gloves are a good idea.  The reason I haven't done the sausage recipe is because I can't stand the idea of putting the raw chicken in the food processor!

Jake loves any meat if it is sliced and grilled with cheese in a tortilla!

Katie's not that keen on chicken either - think it's a bit dry. She prefers anything with minced beef, slices of ham, fish ....  Katie does eat a bit of chicken if it's in some kind of sauce (white sauce, mushroom, white wine sauce  :o) as I think that makes it a bit softer...

Welcome Bec!  And Happy New Year everyone for tomorrow  :)

Anna only has chicken in The Famous Sauasage Recipe (TM) - I don't make it with apple as I'm a bit suspicious that apple is one of the things that upsets her tummy, so she has leek in it instead.  She seems to eat almost anything with leek in it!

Haven't tried her on any kind of casserole things yet ... am too lazy to make them just for her, and have been worried that anything I casserole in normal stock for us will have too much salt in it.  Am I being a bit over-concerned on that?  I guess she'll only be getting a small bit of sauce each time...

Am making a big batch of beef and barley casserole for guests for New Years Day lunch tomorrow, though, so she can maybe have some of that.

Haven't tried beans yet either but you've reminded me that we probably could give them a go. I think we've got into a rut with what she eats - I got really cautious when we had the funny tummies and stopped trying anything new, but since it seems to be only fruit that upsets her, we probably need to start being more adventurous on the savoury front.  New year's resolution is to try more things with her!

Bryony - love the new picture. Doesn't she look grown up!!

Cathy - casseroles - we compromise!  If I would usually use two stock cubes for something for me and DH, then I only use one now. And figure that Katie only has a small portion so a little bit of stock isn't going to hurt....

Happy New Year to you all too!

Bryony x

I agree about the stock cubes.  We tend to make enough for about 6 portions and therefore freeze what we haven't eaten.  She is eating such a small amount of it, that the salt intake is very minimal.  Bryony, love the new pic of Katie, sooooo cute.

This isn't strictly BLW, but has anyone experience growth spurts around 9 months.  Last night Alice woke at 11.05pm, went straight back to sleep and then woke again at 11.45 and was awake screaming until 2.30am.  We wondered if it was teeth, as you can see the small buds just below the gum, so after 2 hours we gave her calpol and she settled and went to sleep.  Today she did her normal morning sleep and this afternoon woke after 45 mins and wouldn't go back down (an hour of PU/PD).  She has been downing her bottles really quickly today and seems to want more afterwards and eating loads.  So we're wondering whether to feed her if she wakes in the night tonight.  We don't want to get into a situation where she wants a feed in the night.  I find the search facility on this site nigh on useless.

Hoping someone can help.

Pauline - I'm sure that my boys had a growth spurt at 9 months.  (I posted somewhere on that actually... I think in the b/f forum.)  But it was FAB.  Once it was over, they finally started sleeping through the night!  Yippee!!
But could be teeth too...

We've had loads of night-wakings for the last month and a bit - partly teeth but also I think she had a growth spurt mixed in, too. I asked here (on another thread) and the opinion seemed to be that there should be an 8 month spurt so maybe she was having that late.  She had a few days of being ravenous (both for milk and solids but especially milk) but seems to be settling down again now.

No actual evidence of growth, though!! If anything, she's getting slimmer. But she is MASSIVELY more active now than previously - she has learnt not only how to crawl but also how to walk (holding onto my hands) in the last 10 days. (She doesn't appear to know that she shouldn't be able to do that yet!) So, I guess it all needs extra energy  :)

Thanks all.  I guess to a certain extent we just have to do what we feel is right for them and hope we're doing it right, 'cause we'll never really know.  I've been reading on various other sites that a growth spurt is common around 3, 6, and 9 months.  So we'll see.  She is on the verge of crawling, commando shuffling everywhere right now, but is also walking holding my hands, has been for a couple of weeks.  She is really testing the waters too, I stand her against the sofa and today she walked along it, took a while, she also holds on with one hand.  I would not be surprised if she was walking by her 1st birthday.  So far tonight, she's woken twice, but has gone down again with a bit of help, but MUCH easier than last night.  However, it's 1.10am and we'll see how the rest of it goes.

We decided to stay up because at midnight here, it's like the blitz with all the fireworks going off, they seem to have stopped now, so bed time.  Alice thankfully has slept through them.  Off to bed with a warm glow having seen in the new year with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.  Fab, fab, fab.

Wishing you all much love, joy and happiness in 2008.

Pauline- I'll bet it's developmental.  It sounds like she's a busy little girl!

Happy New Year everyone!

Thank you for all of the chicken ideas. I gave her some canned chicken and she ate that pretty well and today I'm doing a crockpot chicken with a white wine sauce, so we'll see how that goes!

would love the crock pot chicken recipe as long as it can be made onion and tomato free. always looking for more ideas as my easiest no fail recipes always have tomatoes.

There were onions, but I didn't put them in.  Just cut up some carrots, celery, garlic, zucchini and put them in the crockpot, cover with a bunch (2.5-3 pounds) chicken.  Top that with salt, pepper, rosemary, more garlic, and thyme (I think that's it, can you tell I was "adapting" this recipe a bit? LOL).  Then pour in 1/2 cup white wine and a cup of chicken broth.  Cook for 4-4.5 hours on high.  Then I melted some butter(about a third of a stick) in a pan, added some flour (2-3 Tbs), stirred for a few minutes, then strained and added just the broth from the crockpot.  Stir all that until it's bubbling and thickened and that's the gravy.  Just poured it back on top of the chicken/veggies.  It was really yummy!
