Just wanted you to know that I am reading your posts, but have been in bed since Wednesday with this head cold.  Just wiped me out completely.  Still feeling really rough.  Am trying to keep up though.

On the subject of nappy contents... I found a whole, complete, untouched cannellini bean in Kayden's nappy today!  It had obviously not been chewed or digested in any way.  So here I am trying to get all this nutritious food into them, but it would appear that a not insignificant quantity of it is travelling straight through untouched!  Are they really getting any goodness from it if that's the case?  Silly question probably, but I couldn't help but wonder if purees are maybe easier to digest.  :-(  Sorry to be thinking naughty thoughts!!

I have often wondered the same thing Vicky, but now our LO's would be eating more finger foods anyway...so I try not to worry.

Well, Jake ate roast beef, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bread and baked pears 2 nights in a row, quite a bit too. I have been giving him straight juice and it does not bother his stomach at all. Seems to help move things along. He also had his first chicken finger at a restaurant after I realized no one ordered baby friendly things to share. He put a huge bite in his mouth and ate it all! So I guess if mommy has patience for him to chew for 20-30 minutes he can get down some things I wouldn't normally give him! 8)

As far as i am aware, blw maintains that before the age of one food is just for fun - that this is the time to practice - and all necessary nutrition etc should come from plenty of breastmilk! try not to worry. not sure how old you lo is but as they get more proficient they will chew more etc....

Hi all-

Thought I'd join this thread as we've been doing BLW with DD-- by default, at first, since she hated being spoon fed.  But now I am a convert-- she really enjoys her food now, and I'm happy I let her go at her own pace instead of pushing her.  We are doing the "modified" BLW- only offering pretty soft foods, and only 1 new food at a time (I never realized how soft you can get things if you just boil it long enough!).

I have a question for those who have given beans, which I was thinking of trying (DH is a vegetarian & so we eat beans often ourselves).  How do you give it to them in a way they can easily pick up but not choke on?  I'm afraid to give her the whole bean, but mashed is a little more like a puree so I'm not sure how she would pick it up.

TIA!

julzmum - hello and welcome!

Beans - Katie loves kidney beans - but they are pretty soft so we just give them whole.  I haven't tried any other types as DH is not a fan of beans and kidney beans are the only ones he will consider eating  ::)

Butterbeans make a great mash alternative to potato - blw doesn't mean no purees :) it just means self-feeding, so if you make a coarse mash, and dd can pick handfuls of it up and put them in her mouth, that's ok!

We also did whole kidney and haricot beans (the kind in baked beans), 'coz when they're well cooked they're easy to chew with and without teeth!

It's been the lack of any teeth here that has been the issue for us.  seems like she can't get into anything without it taking FOREVER  and mostly ending up in the dog's belly instead of hers.  i usually end up helping her out by ripping the thing up more or giving it to her with my fingers (cheating a bit, i know)

Hello everyone,
I am new here and will really appreciate your opinion on iron intake issue. If it was already discussed please redirect me (I am still trying to finish Thread #1) My DD is 5.5MO, she is exclusively bf and I am planning to introduce solids pretty soon. I like the idea of BLW however i am worried about the iron intake after 6 months. As far as i know babies are supposed to get iron from the cereal but according to BLW approach cereal is okay when they can feed themselves with it. The thing is that I have a history of anemia (iron deficiency) when I was a kid and it didn't straighten out until adulthood. (I am still taking prenatal vitamins). As a kid I never suffered from lack of appetite however iron issue remained.
I am very worried that my DD can get anemia as well if I let her eat BLW way.

thanks,
yuliya

Yuliya - I just LOVE your avatar!

For iron, we gave Katie red meat (minced beef made into beef burgers) from about 7 months of age

Not sure what others did?

i gave an iron supplement on my doctors advice after I told her that I was making DD's cereal which is generally Iron fortified.  I have a liquid one made by Infamil called Poly-Vi-Sol that the ped recommended.
Just be careful, the Iron stains clothing if it drips.

Yuliya, welcome.  It's not something I've thought about, I have to say.  I was concerned about it ages ago before we started BLW, but then have obviously forgotten about it.  The main thing we keep an eye is on salt content.

By the by, am feeling quite a bit better since yesterday.  Thanks for all your good wishes.

Bryony, love the new pic and happy belated birthday to Katie.  I'm interested to know what you're doing now she's one and if you've changed anything.

Alice has started being quite sick again the past couple of days.  She is teething, so I'm wondering if that's anything to do with it, I know it's not normally associated, but wondering if that's the trend.

Ladies, thanks so much for the feedback. I am glad I don't have to worry much about Whisper's iron level for some time. It's just everyone around says babies need more iron after 6 mo of age.
This morning put DD in high chair and put some banana on her tray. She was not interested at all, may be because banana kind of blended with the colour of the tray  :P. Will keep on trying.

Yuliya, the great thing about BLW is that they can go at their own pace.  She'll eat when she wants and it's so nice not to have to worry about it.  As my earlier post says, my dd is 7 1/2 months and most of her food ends up on the floor.  I figure though that as she figures out how to eat and that the dog will get it when she drops it on the floor, she'll eat more.

As far as iron goes, I haven't really thought about it at all.  My ped didn't mention it to me, but then again, dd is on formula.  Is the iron concern just for bf babies?
