not eating much protein
« on: December 23, 2007, 13:09:00 pm »
DS is a fussy eater but on the whole has had a pretty varied diet, getting enough of each of the food groups. However, just lately he seems to have gone right off meat. He has turned his nose up at some of his favourite meals. The protein meals I usually give are also mixed with veggies so he isn't getting those either. He won't eat eggs and is very picky about most foods. Is this quite common and is there anything I can do?

Don't have any actual advise and don't know where you are in the world but have you heard of Quorn, its a mushroom protein meat substitute.  Aimed at vegetarians but is good for anyone.  Its naturally high in protein being mushroom family and comes in lots of different forms and tastes.  DD doesn't really like meat but she loves Quorn pieces which go great in a stirfry.  If you can get it, it may be worth giving it a go.  HTH

Dairy is an excellent source of protein, especially cottage cheese and yogurt. Peanut butter is also good. Make sure he's eating some foods that contain iron, also, since meat is where most people get their iron. Most breakfast cereals are fortified with iron. It's really common for toddlers to go off meat or refuse it altogether (neither of my kids have ever eaten it), and it's still possible for them to eat a balanced and healthy diet without it.

I got some great protein ideas on a past topic. I tried to paste the link, but couldn't get it to show up  :(
It's not too far down on the list of threads and titled "protein ideas".
