Please can someone help me too?
I am having the same prob as Leslie, infact our lo's seem to be mirror imaging each other, including the times they woke last nt.
Maya is 13 mths and napping is horrid, also NW seem to happen whether she sleeps well in day or not(see other post on board).  What I would like advice on now though is what I should be doing with regards to naps.  We have always gone by A times previously and although this has not really worked, for about a month ago was working quite nice.  She was having around 11.5 hrs nt and 1.5-1.75 approx in day broke into 2 naps.
However after a spiral of OT was all over the place again.  We have tried to go back to original plan which did not work so I thought I would give BTC a go.  The last 2 days have been fine, same times approx same length of nap, yesterday she took an hr in the am, 45 mins pm and bed at 6.30, we had NWs!! today tried to put her to bed at the same time she napped 30 mins! So what now? do I stick with times or alter depending on nt sleep/ A times? if short am nap do I bring pm nap forward or still stick to a time.
Please help ,  I feel so frustrated and panic when she only naps 30 mins in the am as I have lost all confidence in what s
I should do next.
Thanks
Rachael

Rachael,
Whatever you do, you need to give it AT LEAST a week to tell if things are improving or not. If you're going to do things by the clock (which seems to be the best way to sort out serious OT when naps and wake ups are all over the place) then pick your times and stick to them regardless of NW or EW. Things may well get worse before they get better but you HAVE to be consistent if you want her to get back into a sensible routine.

Thanks Laura, but what do I do if she only naps for 30 mins? we have never had any success with extending naps, so do I still stick to the same time ? wont this make her even more OT, for eg she has only had 1 hr all day today on top of a really bad nt. I also find if the 1st nap doesnot work she wont nap the rest of the day.
Is this the way I should be heading or A times>

Sometimes when they have got to be *chronically* OT, it's like their body clock is all over the place and they don't know when they should be asleep and when they should be awake, especially if nap and bedtimes have been varied massively because of irregular wake up times and varying nap lengths.

Doing things 'by the clock' gives their body clock an opportunity to reset so that their body knows when to expect a naptime and when to expect bedtime.

I expect you're right that in the short term (i.e. on a given day) they will be more OT to start with, but once they get used to the predictable naptimes they do seem to start napping better. Certainly it's what worked for us, when all else had failed. I can't promise that it will work for you but if your situation is anything like Leslie's then I would give you the same advice:

Pick a pattern of naps that you think is closest to what your LO can cope with and stick to those naptimes and bedtime regardless of wake up time or length of naps for at least one week. Hopefully by that time you will start to see some improvement in their nighttime sleep and you can then think about tweaking their routine (and sticking to THAT for another week before tweaking again).

HTH
Laura.

Rachel - Just to give you the added bit of confidence that what Laura has told you is absolutly spot on.  I know it flies in the face of reading your LO's cues etc to go by the clock but its just a short term measure to get them through over the chronic OT state and things will then start to get better.  Its not a quick fix or perfect solution because when they get this OT there isn't a perfect solution and certainly no quick fixes  ;) but it will settle her sleep enough to let you work out what her sleep requirements currently are.

Sorry to be a pain, but I really want to nail this.  If I cant extend her naps and can only get an 1hr out of her (today for eg) I presume I should be gettng her to bed super early?
What if I cant extend naps any longer than 30mins ever?

OK, so here's what we had today after last night's debacle:

5:53am Awake
9:10am-9:50am Nap
1:10pm-1:38pm Nap (extended til 2:20pm)
Bedtime- aiming for 5:30pm

Shouldn't she have adjusted to 1 of these darn nap times by now?

Ok so today wasn't brilliant but was not a total failure either,  considering her NW the previous night.  I really don't think the total amount of sleep was bad even if you had to extend it.  I do really think you need to work on extending the last nap with PD or wi/pd/wo.

Remember you have only just adjusted her pm nap down so that can't be set yet, and it is most likely that 30/40mins is all she really needs in the am.  If your going to bring her pm nap time down then you should actually limit the am nap to 30mins, keeping it at catnap length.

Rachel - The 30min naps are because she is chronically OT.  When her routine stabalises on the fixed nap routine he nights and naps will start to improve, basically what your'll probably get it good nights but still not perfect naps, so then and only then when its all settled down you wil lbe able to tweak her routine to try to get the best from her naps as well.

Leslie - her pm nap has changed time so, as New Mum said, it's going to take time for her to adjust to that again. I agree that 40 mins is fine for an am nap.

Rachel - it's really difficult to know what we're talking about when we don't know what your normal routine is. I was presuming that you were already trying to get her to bed super-early (as Leslie is).

OK, that makes sense.  I won't stress about the pm nap for another 6 days!  I'm not quite mentally prepared to do WI/PD/WO to extend the pm nap at this point (kind of like when you keep saying, "I'm going on a diet... soon"), so I haven't started yet.  And 30-40 mins may be all she needs in the morning.  That too makes sense.

I had her in bed by 5:40pm, so cross your fingers for a good night.

Hope you are all having a good one.

Leslie

1st NW at 7:04pm, screaming hysterically and she wouldn't let me lie her back down for 10 mins.  I think B2S about 7:30pm.

When does it get easier?  Haven't I paid my dues yet?

Hi again,

We have never really had any "routine" as much as we have tried.  Maya has always been so inconsistent with naps, and very sensitive to timings.  We have mostly had 30mins naps withthe occasional longer nap thrown in.  I was finding if she had a good nt sleep ie 11.5 - 12 hrs could go only 3 hrs I would get 45 mins in the am recently.  Now we are all over the place again.
She only had 1 hr asll day yesterday, went to bed at 6pm no nw's  but up this morning at 5am. SO what do I do this morning keep her up until 9am which would mean 4hrs A time?
Also I do she sleeps better at nt without day time naps, what does this mean?

Waht I was trting to aim for pre OT phase was: if she had had a good night 3 hrs Atime if less than 11.5 hrs then less A time.
2nd A time 3.25 if 45 mins nap or more, if less I would adjust to around 3hrs.
Again A time before bed depending on pm nap, but generally around 3.5-3.75,
This was working fairly ok, best we have ever had.  I was only getting around 45 mins each nap but a good nt sleep on top seemed to do the job.
So now not sure if I shjould revert back to this?  the only prob was timings were inconsistent depending on what times she woke.
