How to switch from bf to ff
« on: December 28, 2007, 09:31:11 am »
Hi, I wondered if I could jump in with a question... My lo is just 6 months, I have started solids but as is suggested this isn't necessarily goin to fill him up. I have tried formula but he doesn't like it. Are there any suggestions for weaning a fully breast fed baby onto formula as an evening meal or top up, to help with sleep?

Hi, I noticed you question jumped to the second page and I didn't want to see it go unanswered. I don't think ff will help your baby sleep any better through the night, they will sleep through the night when they are good and ready to. Also, as your lo is 6 months, you've probably hit a growth spurt. You should be able to offer (or substitute) a formula feed for a bf in the evening (my friend did mixed feeds for 8 months). If your lo doesn't like the formula I would perhaps try mixing expressed breast milk with formula for your lo to get used to the taste of it first, then slowly change the mix until it is formula. Hopefully someone else will be able to jump on with some other suggestions (I'm limited in advice here because my dd had a milk allergy so we couldn't touch formula).

Thanks for ur responses. My lo is now 7 month and the most formula he's taken is 2 ounces. I'll try the mixing with bm idea. My mom suggested I try another brand. Currently using cow and gate 1st stage. Or perhaps I need to try the follow on milk?

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try another formula brand but I would try the mix first. I'm not sure what "follow on milk" is, it sounds like more of a transitional formula for older los ready to switch to milk (from the name). If it is, I would hold off on it until your lo is older. Post on the formula board and I'm sure they will be able to answer you and probably suggest the most popular and best tolerated formulas.
If you are wanting to switch to formula for filling up and sleep (as opposed to weaning purposes) I wouldn't do the switch as breast milk has the greatest calories and natural nutritional value. Your lo will get all he needs from bfing while he's getting used to the tastes and textures of solids without the need for formula top ups. Just make sure you are bfing before the solids so he fills up on breast milk first.

I'm switching to formula because I will return to work soon and I want his dad and nursery staff to be able to feed him. Unfortunately when I pump my breastmilk I only get an ounce or so after 20-30mins...depressing. I have been pumping and storing up, but my lo still doesn't drink much...it tastes funny to me anyway...so I wouldn't doubt he has noticed the funny taste too.
