10 week old slept well, all of a sudden NOT anymore!
« on: December 31, 2007, 03:19:32 am »
My 10 week old ds took to EASY really well. We've been on it for many weeks now.

After getting used to the shush-pat, he eventually learned to fall asleep with only a couple of shush-pats....  if he woke after 45 minutes, again after some training, he was able to get back to sleep himself....  it was heaven!

He was awake for approx. 1.5 hours before yawning and we usually only do fairly low-key Activity.

NOW, the last few days, he takes FOREVER to shush-pat to sleep, sometimes 45 minutes, and he instantly cries when he wakes in the middle of a nap.  At night!  He had his last feed at 7:30pm, had a bath after a little down time to digest a little, and he didnt get into a deep sleep until almost 10pm!  He often will fall asleep, only to wake within 10 minutes and need the shush-pat all over again.

AND it seems that he is tired after being awake only 1/2 hour to 45 minutes...should i be putting him down already?

Oh, and now he is waking at 3am...  i thought it might have been a growth spurt, so i fed him, but now im thinking it was because we had a busy xmas, slept a different houses and travelled some and it's become a habit now....  last night when he woke at 3am, i shushed him back to sleep...it took 20 mins, but he didnt wake up until 4:45am (more typical).
He is bottle-fed, eating 6 oz per feed, 6 feeds including a DF (and he takes 5-6oz in the DF!).

Everything is all wonky now that he is not sleeping well!  I know that bad naps= bad nighttime and vice versa, but how do i get him back on track????
I am going to wake-to-sleep tonight at 2am to try to alleviate the 3am...but why is he so fussy now getting to sleep? and HOW do i fix it???
ANY advice would help!  For the last 3 days, my WHOLE day is spent trying to put him to sleep. and i have to admit, i had resorted to putting him in his swing where he WILL sleep...but I hate doing it and never let my DH do it!

Please help!
Thanks!
Lindsay

Hi Lindsay, Can you post your routine.

It could be that he is OT from xmas etc my 15 week old definately is. I found that after about 8 weeks my DS was finding the shh/pat far too stimulating and if he was OT it just made him worse.

E  10:30am feed 6 oz
A  watch TV!
S  11:30 cranky, asleep by 12:00

E 1:30 feed 6 oz
A read a book, hang with mom
S asleep by 2:30-3:00, hard to get to sleep

E 4:30pm feed 6oz

Any tips on the yawning after 1/2 hour 45 minutes of being awake and that includes the feeding!  Should he go back down right away????

He just had a GREAT 2 hour nap, 8:30-10:30am, and has yawned already (before 11am), is that just waking up yawning????
Thanks!

Hi Bryony...
they range anywhere from 1-2 hours....  it used to be that he slept 1.5 hours, but now it's all wonky.

The last few days he's been waking at the 45 min mark and not able to put himself back to sleep like he used to....  and he freaks out right away....  if i dont get in there at the slightest peep, he's wailing and VERY hard to calm...this is when i employ the swing.

So are you adjusting your A time if he has less sleep than usual?  If he usually has 1.5hr A time after a 1.5hr nap, it will be less after a shorter nap. It was just the description of him being more difficult to get to sleep for naps that made me wonder if he was OT

So if he has a shorter A time, then is he/should he be going to sleep sooner too?
I dont let him sleep over the 2 hour limit, and it's very rare that he would....  or should i just let him catch up...and wake him for the next feeding?  Then i feel it'll mess uo his nighttime sleep...

FYI, we did wake to sleep last night and he slept until 4:45am again...whew.

Hi Lyndsay, I'm not and expert by any means so can only offer a little but of guidance from my experience  :)

I always figured that the LO's are just like us and if they have had a short sleep AM then they need a longer sleep PM, if they will do it that is!! does sound like he is a little OT, don't worry about his daytime sleep effecting night time sleep, the better they sleep in the day the better they sleep at night (wierd I know) I just wouldn't let your LO go any longer than 2 hours, the BW does say no longer than a sleep cycle. I would say that if he isn't going to sleep until 9.30 then he only gets 8 hours a night so sounds OT, have you tried reversing his final routine? say bath at 7ish and then feed at 7.30 and put to bed, also try waking him at 7am even if it's just a top up, this would get things a little more on track for you try putting him to bed by 7 and you may get a rest earlier!!! HTH   ;)

Another thing that I have discovered lately is that sometimes when my DS gets cranky early he is just bored and if I move him to something else he is much happier, do you have a play gym or mat for him to kick around on?
