Lactose Intolerance

My daughter was officially diagnosed with lactose intolerance today after 7 months of wondering  :o

I already make most of my own purees anyway but have been using the odd baby jar here or there...i stopped using them once i made a firm decision to get my GP's opinion as i think some baby foods have milk binding products in them...GP agrees with me...BUT now im a bit stumped...how far do i take the 'no cows milk thing'? i know she cant have yoghurt anymore....but what can she have? I realise its not as restrictive as MSPI but i would just like tohear off any mums who have LO's with lactose intolerance and what sorta foods they give them, as im presuming cheese is out of the equation.....

Sorry to sound like a complete airhead  :P

How was your DD diagnosed? Can she drink Lactaid milk and have those products?

i make everything from scrarch.
purees of every veg.but introduce every 4-5 days.then u will know if they have a tollerance level too.

Is your daughter breastfed or bottle fed? I assume if she is bottle fed they prescribed a lactose free formula. I would stick to making all your own puree's at the moment as their is still lots of choice if you only have to avoid lactose. I would also wean slowly just incase she shows signs of any other allergies/intollerances.

Hiya guys  :)

Lo is having lactose free formula at the mo made by SMA...as far as i know this is the only formula available in the UK that is lactose free but i dont know tbh  ???

Yeah i normally make my own purees...just got a bit lazy coz she didn't seem interested kwim? she did have reactions to banana and apple but for some reason can eat them combined  ???

Jenny - is your Lo lactose intolerant?

Karen - she was diagnosed on her symptoms really....unfortunately according to my GP there is no formal test in the UK for it...

hi i live in usa and i give my dd similac lactose free. what were the symptoms for your lo. my baby was always gassy and was spitting up most of her feeding.she is 7 month old now.

yip she is viki.we have pepti and she is fine on that.she has been on that since about 8 wks.
she has food intollerances too ,wheat,soy etc.
nightmare with hay fever in spring also.
just shout if you need anything.

Baba - its a long story really.....she suffered extremely bad colic...was throwing up alot even on the first day she was born...the throwing up calmed down by 3 months but the colic continued till she was 4 months....after that she continued to be gassy and had diarhea most of the time...it was always green and loose and watery...she had alot of trouble sleepingcoz of it...but to be honest many friends and family said she was a normal tempramental baby so i plodded on..... :-\

we were much the same with dd1.she wasnt diagnosed till 20 weeks,but she was constipated and needed suppositories ::).
i think thats why with india i knew straight away what to look for and pushed for appointments with a paed.
sleep was a huge issue here.india used to roll around and groan in her cot and even bruise her head on the cot bars.i used to be up all night cos she couldnt sleep and even through the day 20mins was the max nap time.

the confusing thing is Cerys did sleep thru the night from 17 weeks....it was the daytime and all the way thru the evening she was unsettled and miserable like she couldnt sleep Kwim?

No not quite yet...shes been on it for a week now and her loose stools have gone and the colour has changed to more of a yellow colour...but its still a bit green and today she was a bit gassy and i ve settled her just now after an hour of being so OT and unsettled (she had settled well at 7pm ???) this is very reminiscent of what used to happen...but yes shes been sleeping during the day ALOT better...

Remember there is always nutrigimen, which your doc said, so hang in there, it might just be a blip  :-\

im hoping so.....I jst find it hard that they diagnose on symptoms alone KWIM?

Dr saidall symptoms point to it.....but its not as though she cant live on the normal milk - its the side effects it seems to cause... :-\

when she was 6 weeks old we were advised by HV to try the lower lactose milk - cow and gate comfort...we found this actually made her worse and was advised to stop giving it to her..

I know its a blip but it puts a feeling of dread in my stomach coz i worry whther i ve done the right thing...my mum doesn't think theres anything really wrong with her (although shes never seen one of her 'normal milk' poops  :-\)...she says shes doing what babies do...cry and not sleep!  ???  :'(
