milk free for a week
« on: January 05, 2008, 20:05:21 pm »
hi
we have just moved countries three weeks ago and my 10 month old has had a few adverse reactions. firstly, the expected one - runny poos!!  Also, she developed excema quite quickly. we saw the dermatologist and he put her on steriod cream and i have to do the daily 'diprobase' routine that i do with my toddler (who also has excema) - ie, all over her body twice a day. then she developed a nasty red bottom, so i saw  a paediatrician who said it was nappy rash and may also be fungal infection so now as well we have another cream for the bottom and barrier cream. also we have a 10 day course of pro-biotic capsules to put in her drink to try and sort out her dodgy tummy ( which no doubt led to her sore bottom) and also she has to be milk free for at least a week. the paed advised us to switch to a lactose free formula and then slowly reintroduce milk products to see if it is causing a problem.
so, after that long intro, can i give soya milk to a baby under a year? not to drink but to mix in cereals or with other foods? what about other soya products like yogurts? my little one is looking longingly at her older sisters yogurts and i feel awful. also im running out of ideas of what to give her to eat.
funny ive always wondered if my daughter was allergic to something, because her poos have always been so loose, never formed - is this usual in the case of allergies?  we stopped the milk on thursday so its only been three days so far, so im not sure how long this may take to sort out. any advise or comments would be appreciated.
thanks

So she was already drinking regular milk? Sorry to be thick.  :-[ We used to use formula for cereal, etc. but did introduce yogurt earlier than a year.

Not a lot of help am I...  well, bumping the post up anyways. There are a lot of knowledgeable allergy ladies around here. {{hugs}}

No I wouldn't recommend it. It's an allergen (one of the most common ones) and no alternative for children who are dairy intolerant or allergic or suffer from asthma, eczema, allergies.

I don't have time to read that link Steffi - but Zara had soy yoghurt before 12 months, she was on soy formula too, she was only dairy intolerant not soy.  But the cross over is about 50%.

I think soy formula is banned in Germany due to the large amount of allergic reactions  :-\

The ped at the hospital said that milk intolerant lo's are usually soy intolerant too, I think he said 2/3 of babies.  My DD has intolerances to both, but we are slowly going to introduce soy this year... am unsure how that will go  :-\

have you considered rice milk? My DD loves that, tastes kind of vanillery (is that even a word lol).

I also agree with everything that has been posted. What country have you moved to? The only reason I is that different products are available in different countries. For example I know they do rice yogurts in the US. Rice milk is an option for using in cereal and tolerated by a lot of children. James can't tolerate certain brands I assume that is due to cross contamination.

we have moved to israel. there is a health shop here so i am going to check out what they have. perhaps rice milk will be another ingredient i can use instead of cows milk. the thing is im not even sure if she IS allergic to milk. the paed suggested it because she had a bad tummy after we arrived, and he said the milk may aggrevate it so better to cut it out for a while. i cant say i have seen a major difference. i actually wonder if it is wheat that is causing a problem.  we are seeing the doc again in the morning so ill post again in the afternoon.
thanks for all your advice, but i think ill hold off trying out soya milk till im sure about the cows milk.
