3 yr old nw's after flu
« on: January 15, 2008, 20:31:42 pm »
My 3 year old dd had the flu last week and was just miserable.  during that time her sleeping went to pot--dropped her nap and was up several times at night.  She is now pretty much better, with the exception of a mildly runny nose, which seems to bother her more during the day than at night, but she is still waking between 3-4 times at night.  She had been napping again but earlier than usual (around 1:15 instead of 2 pm) and for 2 hours instead of her usual 1 hour nap, but then she attended pre-school this morning for the first time since being sick and she didn't nap this afternoon!

I'm not sure how to deal with the night wakings--it hasn't been an issue for more than 1 year (yippee!) and my old strategies don't seem appropriate with a 3.5 year old.  When she wakes she usually wants me to tuck her in again and give her a kiss although once a night she will want to  pee, something that wouldn't happen before she got sick.  I've been putting her in bed early when she doesn't nap and she drops off straight away which suggests to me that she is still overtired.  We have told her that now that she's better she needs to sleep through the night, but given the famous contrariness of toddlers, perhaps that was the wrong approach!

She really needs to catch up on her sleep after being sick but I'm at a bit of a loss.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I am sorry its taken this long to reply

Personally I haven't dealt with this... but just thinking that maybe her nap is too long during the day now & shes not tired enough for a sold 10+hrs of sleep (I recall your dd being the 10hrs night sleep).

Also whenever we had moments where my dd had to catch up on sleep, I always worked on her catching up at night rather than during the day... so again, perhaps limit her nap again to 1hr & maybe aim for a slightly earlier bedtime :-\.

Sorry if not much help.,... hopefully someone else can help you better. My dd is a little younger & still occasionally wakes & a tuck is about all she needs as well. As for the toilet, could you maybe put a nightlight in the hallway so that she can help herself to the toilet... maybe the novelty of her asking you for these things will wear off & she'll go back to sleeping through.

hth a little

My ds is also just about to turn 3 and is going through the nap/no nap transition. I work part time and he's in nursery 3 days a week where he just will not sleep. Come thursday he's so tired he barely knows what to do with himself so that day I let him take a long nap. That seems to get him back on track so the rest of the week I do try for a nap but wake him after 1 1/2 hrs (he's always needed a lot of daytime sleep,he used to have 3 hrs straight!). On nap days he's goes to bed 8-8.30 and non nap days I aim to get him settles before 7. This seems to be working at the moment until he's ready to drop it completely.

Also forgot to say on nap days (particularly when he's at nursery mon-wed) we're pretty much guaranteed to have some n/w but we stick with WI/WO, toilet if he asks for it but straight back to bed and WI/WO again until he's settled-nowadays often only taking once in,hooray!!

Thanks ladies.  We seemed to have worked out most of the sickness related bugs, but like your ds Jen, dd skips the odd nap, usually when she sleeps in a bit in the morning (even 30 minutes!).  Just curious, do you let ds sleep in a bit when he has nw's, and does that effect his ability to nap?

Yes I do let him sleep in when I'm off work-work days I have to get him up at 7 (bad mummy!!) but days off he often gets up at 7.50.....saying that the monkey was up at 5.30 this morning had no naps all week and VERY grumpy!!!! I don't find his wake up affects his nap as I'll then put him down for the nap a little later. Depending on his mood and wake up time the start of his nap can be anywhere from 11.45-1.30,I don't worry too much about what time it is. I always give him lunch first so if it's an early nap we skip snack, have early lunch then put him down. HTH
