Does anyone's toddler do this??
« on: January 16, 2008, 11:42:47 am »
We quite often here a thumping sound in Leorah's room when we are sure she's asleep like she is throwing herself down on the matress. Since she has been walking we have also heard her mumbling or biting her cot rails and go in to check her and she is standing and either lie her down or she lies herself down, seemingly very sleepy. Well today she is sick and fell asleep on the sofa and whilst still sleeping she mumbled stood up and carried on sleeping with her head resting on the top of the sofa! She then threw herself down and woke up with a shock  :o Is this some form of sleep walking/disturbance? I apparantley used to sleepwalk as a child. It's a bit worrying as she can almost climb out of her cot but a toddler bed would obviously be dangerous  :-\ So far she hasn't tried getting out of her cot in the night so we are putting a BGB on hold until we absolutely have to. WWYD about the standing thing though, it doesn't seem to bother her but I am worried she will hurt herself.

Ryan does it a lot , he sleeps sitting up for a long time ,if I go up to check and find him like that then I just gently lay him down .I used to think it was comfier for him being a refluxer and that's why he did it . I was a sleep walker and still am a sleep talker .Ryan went in a big bed at 15 months and with a bed guard he has never fallen out , I have all aroundhim padded to incase he throws himself at the wall side .DP laughs cos it looks like a padded cell but trust me he needs the padding

Thanks for the tips, padding sounds like an excellent idea  :) I never heard of this before but perhaps it is quite common?

My son doesn't throw himself down, but he bangs his head or foot; this is how he self soothes. I wonder if that is why yours is throwing herself down?????

Mmm, I don't think so as she appears to be asleep, I think it started when she started walking she kept finding herself standing in the cot and would cry but now she seems to just throw herself back down. She self soothes by pulling her hair, she has a lot thankfully  ::)

I have to bump this up again because I now know Leorah is definitely asleep on these wakings. Last night I went in her room and she was asleep standing up! The last few days we have also heard her crying a very sad cry (her teething cry) and when we go in she is standing up so we lie her down and she is sleeping. It only happens in the first part of the night before we go to bed and we are wondering if the teething is making it worst?

We went to Ikea yesterday and realised our cot can actually have one side taken off and replaced with a bed rail so at least we have got that sorted though we wont transform it until it is absolutely necessary  :)
