When my LO was 5.5/6 months we started the cereal route with Rice...which equals horrible gas and pain....I stopped for a month since she refused all other cereals.  Really, she just wasnt ready for cereal or solids yet, even though they've hit that 6  month mark.  Doesn't mean our babies are like everyone else's babies...She is now almost 7 months and have been doing great the last month with solids baby food and oat and barley cereal.....

When you think of it rice is a bad starch for us adults to digest and is a major carbohydrate so to think what it does on little stomachs that may not be ready?!

My lo refused rice so we started on oatmeal, which she also didn't like.  now that we're about 1month in to trying, she is liking oatmeal more.  We're doing a bit of a mix with BLW. Love that because she can feed herself in her own time.  Many times she's still so full on her milk after even a couple hours that she doesn't want any solids at all! Everybody's different, right?

aw, what a cute picture laurie :)

we did a mix too. i really like the blw approach but am too much of a control freak to do it 100%  ::) had to make sure a little was getting in his tummy. i also use the "super baby foods" book by ruth yarow and since he started accepting cereal i've been giving him a breakfast of super porridge every morning. mixed grain cereal with veg, avocado, flax seed, mashed tofu, etc. (yuck  ;)) then blw for the rest of the meals, that worked great for both of us.

I guess i'm not the only one with rice cereal issues after all!  I've stopped the rice and introduced oats instead, DS loves it mixed with pears. Everything is well now, except for other NW's due to teething... that's another story!

anneis - i agree with you on the starch, common sense!

I think iron supplementation also plays a part.  When I was anemic for a time and had to take iron, it made me very constipated.  Also, prenatal vitamins with iron often come with something to counteract the iron-inducing constipation.
