alternative to whole milk
« on: January 17, 2008, 18:59:14 pm »
Charlie, my one year old, seems to struggle with whole milk.  He has reflux and used a hypoallergenic formula up until 2 months ago when we switched to Enfamil Next Step.  He seems to be doing just fine so his GI specialist said to slowly mix in whole milk.  He doesn't seem to be handling it well.  It adds to his constipation problems, seems gassy, and quite fussy.  He handles yogurt, cheese, etc. rather well.

Would you just continue with the Next Step formula for a while and then try whole milk or is there something else I could try?  He is a very picky eater so I thought the Next Step was providing him with some nutrients that he may be missing out on.

Thoughts?  Thanks!

To be honest I think I would stick with the Enfamil next step for now especially as you feel he needs the extra nutrients which it provides. There is no rush to have your lo on whole milk. When your ds is eating a wider range of food you could possibly try fortified rice milk as an alternative to whole milk if it still causes problems at that stage.

We tried cow's milk at 12 months but night wakings got worse , spitting up was worse and DS was very irratable .I think cow's milk is very heavy on the tummy and for a refluxer it's worse .We switched to rice milk with no problems ( added calcium )

Agree with PPs but also there are some LOs who can tolerate 2% milk but not whole milk -  not sure why  but might be something to try. If not, another vote for fortified rice milk!

Hey Alison, Not sure what you decieded to do,but I would deft. wait as long as you can to switch to milk.  If he takes the formula and drinking it, I would not stop giving it to him (no need really) unless he is just filling up on the formula and not eating.

You could also try Lactaid.  It is Lactose free whole milk.  I gave Zach that for a while and he handled it just fine.

The rice milk is great, but has not fat or protein, so you would have to add fat and rice protein if he was not eating very well.

Good Luck!  Wendy

I think we're going to just stick with the next stage formula that we are using.  He's still drinking it and I feel better with the extra nutrients it has because at times we have feeding issues.

Thanks for your input.  I really appreciate it!
