Soy alternatives to dairy
« on: January 23, 2008, 09:07:08 am »
My 10 month old DD has dairy and egg allergy, and I've found this has really limited our variety with solid foods. I haven't tried any soy based things yet (cheese, yoghurt etc), and was wondering if anyone else has and how they've found it. We've just weaned onto soy formula and she seems to be taking it well (a bit constipated but was expecting that). She obviously doesn't have any allergy to soy (reflief!). I'm a bit worried about the lack of calcium intake she'll have though.

You could try some other soy products although if your dd is a little constipated from the soy formula it may be worth waiting a while. If your dd is on a soy formula then I would imagine that it has added calcium in it. Although I did not really look into it properly as my ds reacted badly to it.

Here is a list of some calcium rich foods that you could try if you are worried about her calcium intake

Spinach (boiled)
Baked beans
Red kidney beans
Curley kale (boiled)
Okra (fried)
Spring greens (raw)
(cooked)
Watercress
Parsley
Spinach (boiled)
Apricots (dried)
Currants
Figs (dried)
Treacle (black)
Tahini
Sesame seeds

Some will not be suitable for your dd due to age, but others will be fine.

Thanks for that Kelly. I'll give them a go.

I would check to be sure but definitely imagine that soy formula (like fortified soy milk that I drink) has adequate calcium content.
