Advice needed- starting solids-formula amounts?
« on: January 28, 2008, 04:11:53 am »
Hi I would like some advice on starting solids with my 5 month old. He shows all the signs and is able to take food from a spoon. I would really like to see some sample routines and also how much formula to give him. Is it 4 or 5 milk feeds a day? And how much per feed? (milk + solids)

Thanks,
Ruth.

Hello!

I like to wait for a bit to give other posters a chance to respond before jumping in, but as no-one has posted yet, I'll answer you!

I don't mean to be dismissive, but did you check out the FAQ section of this forum? This is the link here - it should offer you some basic info to get you started!

As a quick guide, we advocate milk before solid foods, because milk is the primary source of nutrition until a year old, and foods are just for the experience. Babies should continue to take their pre-solids quantity of milk until at least 9 months old, in that time, they will gradually increase their solid intake until it matches and then overtakes the milk intake at nearer a year.

There is no rush to introduce large quantities or a great variety of food this early, he's got 80 or so years in which to eat, let him take his time :)!

Hi,

My son has reflux and even though he is on medication and thickened formula his reflux has only improved slightly. The doctor suggested that we start on solids as he is 8.2kg and the solids may help with his reflux.

What is the normal range of liquid intake for a 5mo?

Ruth.

Some people do find that offering a small amount of solid food prior to a milk feed can help with reflux, but it is helpful to separate out this process from introducing solid foods as something to eat, which is something different entirely!

I think you should post in the bottlefeeding forum or check out their FAQ about quantities of milk for 5 months - 20oz is the minimum until 12 months, but at 5 months it should be significantly more than this - I do acknowledge that reflux can put babies off milkfeeds, however it is important to persevere if you can :)
