Corn allergy?
« on: January 29, 2008, 03:01:14 am »
Hey there,

Sorry if this has been discussed before! I think Henry has corn allergy. We were giving him Heinz corn stars and he broke out in the most horrendous rash. He had just been an antibiotics, but we have been giving Bio gaia and also using Clotrimazole/Canesten but the skin is now broken and raw... We stopped the star puffs for at least 2 days, and I can't say that there is REALLY a difference. The rash is exactly where the pooh sits (sorry for TMI) not in his groin but around the anus and I looks like it is burning him.

He has been eating like a horse and is happy in himself, except when we go to change his nappy.  :-\ And when he baths. He has been having a lot of sweet potato too.

Does either sound like a likely allergen that any on ehas experienced with their LO?

Thanks!
DI

Sweet potato is a low allergen food...I'd be surprised if this is causing a problem.  What other additives are in the Heinz corn stars?  It might not be the corn..but what comes with it??

Hey DI:

Bio gaia - Is that probiotics?  That name looked familiar because I got Tyler's probiotics and that was the site I went through.

If so be aware that I called the company because Tyler was still having bad gas with the probiotic drops and they do contain trace amounts of lactose in them.

I can't remember if you avoid all dairy with Henry or not.

- Also, I remember when Zach was on antibiotics he got an very very bad rash all over his butt and eventually on his groin and ended up having a yeast infection from the antibiotics.

But if you do suspect a corn allergy, check the medicine to see if that has any trace amount of corn in them.

Corn is in everything.

I hope I helped some.

Hugs!! Wendy

Great to hear that Sweet potato is a low allergen!! :) He loves it.

Wendy, you are a fountain of knowledge :D The Bio Gaia is a probiotic and he is on an antifungal/anti-yeast cream as part of his nappy changing 'regime'.

I see that the Heinz Nutrios ALSO have corn in it. ::)  ::)  ::)  It is one of the few new things we have added and last time he had a rash like this, and I thought it was just a rash with a yeast infection, it was when we had reintroduced milk.  Took me a week to remember and realise that. :o ::) So we havecontinued to vigilantly avoid milk since. Me thinks 18 months of age before we try milk and milk protein again.

He isn't lactose intolerant, but after a bout of diarrhoea most babies struggle to manage lactose, as the part of the GUT that deals with it, gets damaged and needs time to regenerate. He finished the Bio Gaia, so I will wait a week or so to see how things progress.

It really seems to be the pooh that causes the rash, as overnight if he did not pooh, the rash is SO much better. Then he has 4-5 poohs a day and the rash looks horrendous. Mmmmm...
