naps vs. nightime
« on: February 05, 2008, 18:58:30 pm »
Hello!
I'm new to the BW board. I recently started 3.5 e.a.s.y. with my 4.5 month old son.
His night time sleep has greatly improved and he will now sleep from 7pm until 7am with a dream feed. He does occasionally wake, but for the most part will put himself back to sleep. It really has been working!
However....NAPS are a struggle, I wanted to take it slowly (3.5 e.a.s.y.) as he can't stay up for the full two hours yet.
I devoted the last two weeks to doing the shush/pat after a 20 minute or 45 minute nap to extend. I've only ever managed to extend a few of the naps, mostly he wakes and I spend the next 40 minutes trying to ease him back to sleep, while he cries. It's so vastly different from night time sleep. I monitor activity before naps, I've tried extending A times (with not so great results, boy, oh boy!) I was wondering, if the night time sleep is so great, should I leave the 45 minute naps to lengthen on their own or will this cause more problems?, i'm new to this and just feel at a bit of a standstill with nap extension.
Today, I decided we both needed a wee break, so I watched his cues. Things were a lot easier but he is sure loves his 45 minute naps!
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome!!  :) Well done for your progress on the nighttimes!! You may find you have more success with pick up/put down,as this is recommended over 4 months old. It could be that the extended A times are just a stretch for him at the moment because of his shorter naps,if that makes sense?!

Thanks, that makes sense! I agree, i'm going to take it slow with the naps. I'll try and enjoy the nights too, with teething fast approaching......everything changes so quickly in babyworld! :)

Hello!
Just wanted to give a little update. Yesterday Camy woke from his first nap at the usual 45 minutes point but instead of going in to do the shuush/Pat, I waited as he wasn't crying. After about 10 minutes of babbling, he fell asleep again and had his first 2 hour nap! I thought I had hit the jackpot and tried this approach with his 2nd nap and he woke after 15 minutes and I could get him to go back down  :( This morning I am leaving him again after he woke at 45 minutes, but although he isn't complaining, he hasn't fallen asleep again. This nap extension is really quite hard! Do you think leaving them in their cot for long periods (even while they babble) will create a negative impact on them being there?
Or am I just being crazy - ha!

Hi camys mum!  I wouldn't worry about leaving your LO in the crib when he wakes from a short nap as long as he isn't crying.  I've done that for my ds and he has occassionally fallen back to sleep...and even if he doesn't, it'll at least give you a few more minutes to yourself :)  No harm done.  You are doing great!!

Ditto.  He's learning to fall asleep by himself - THAT'S GREAT PROGRESS   :)
