2-1 transition, need some guidance
« on: February 06, 2008, 11:05:45 am »
Hi all,

I thnk my Lo is making the 2-1 transition. He is just over 1. He normally used to be up at 7:30/45 and start his morning nap at 10/10:15, but for the last 2 days he has been falling asleep only at 11...so delaying his morning nap and the afternoon naps are becoming shorter.

My question: At present I had to wake him up after 1hr and 15 minutes at each nap, he did not choose to wake up on his own, but he didnt cry when I would wake him up...so do I now let him sleep as long as he likes for the morning nap, to understand what his new routine is? or how do I know how much sleep is ok?

His afternoon naps are about 30-40 minutes now.

thanks,
Mukta

Hi Mukta!  I remember the transition.  Try not to  worry too much.  It did take a little itme for everything to fall in its place.  I really watched the signs and used that as my guide.  Our transition actually went quite smoothly but don't get me wrong we had some weird afternoon naps too.  What helped for me is that my dd was in preschool at the time and we had to pick her up by 11 so ds had to have a short morning nap and I had to wake him up.  He would sleep about 45- 60 minutes back then at the start of the transition.  Two days a week when dd was in preschool he would only have about a 45 minute nap depending on what time he woke up.  Needless to say he was an early riser and had 2 naps until 14 -15 months old.  What also helped was during the transition we moved across country from Arizona to Georgia.  The few days in the car and time zone change moved are sleep patterns around until we got settled.  As we inched closer to 1 nap and I knew he couldn't make it until the normal nap time I moved the afternoon up.  Lunch also was earlier for us.  What I ended up doing was go for a walk around 10 or 10:30 everyday.  Dd would take a little cat nap of about 20 minutes in the stroller.  Then we would play and have lunch about 11:30 and then nap at 12/12:30.  The cat nap really helped.  Of course there were times that we didn't get our walk in and I just had lunch at 11 and then nap by 11:30.  A couple times ds started to fall asleep while eating lunch.  I also know some people who do a nap at around 11 or 11:30 and then lunch after the nap.  It all worked out!!  Currently ds is 2years old and he naps at around 1:30 and sleeps a good 2 hours.  I hope that helps.

Good Luck
HUGS

Hi Lisa,

that does help, I think DS will stay with the morning nap being his main nap and if thats at 11, I think we will stay at lunch being at 1, so should give him nearly 1hr45min nap, and maybe a catnap in the afternoon around 4/4:30, and slowly can tarnsition to an even longer am nap and later lunch and almost no pm nap.

Its a wait and watch...but if I understood this correctly i should let him sleep longer in the am if thats what he wants but o longer than 2 hrs..right?

the best part about 1 nap is that he can now actually go out to playgroups and have fun! It was quite hard to do so with his existing routine.

I am also hoping this Will sort out DS's NW as well...he likes  a bottle between 4-5 in the morning and then goes back to sleep till past 7..weird boy!

Thanks Lisa

Mukta,
There is loads of info on the 2-1 transition on the Naps FAQ board, there's also a support thread for people going through the transition on the main Naps board.

we just have been doing the transition and we have pretty much gone cold turkey on it.  HE was napping at 10 and 3 daily and it was getting later and later from 11 to 4 or 4:30 so we just scrapped the pm nap, i let him guide me on the am one ( somewhere around 12) and then we just do a early bedtime ( 6:30 ish)!  It has been going very well so far, i can't complain.  it's nice to have the evening to mself again!!!

no choice, he will bring the house down if I dont give him milk...and won't go back to sleep....and I am not ready to rock him and star another issue here....tried water..bad reaction..so going to start diluting from today..fingers crossed.

good luck!!!  i was glad mine was easy, out of sight out of mind.  He stopped getting a night bottle at 9 months and we ditched his bedtime bottle at 14 months. so no bottles at all but i tell you if he sees on he wants it!
