I agree with Claire's mum - it's a balance between getting some sleep and avoiding AP. In general you want to be trying for less intervention, so that she does not get reliant on it to sleep.... so if she's having problems settling then do the full-on intervention, but if she looks OK then try and do slightly less...

Does the sleep battle ever end?  Whenever I feel like it is pretty good, it last for a week and then I feel like everything has changed and I don't know what to do.  Is all this sleep training worth it?

My dd has been waking at 5am.  I have been bf and putting her back to bed.  She wakes at 11pm and I feed her then, so she is going 6 hrs.  I don't necessarily want to begin a cycle of feeding at 5 am but if I respond to her then she won't go back to sleep at all.  Awhile ago she was waking early and I was so exhausted and kind of out of it at that hour that I just let her cry. She eventually would go back to sleep and wake at 7am.  Now we are back to early wakings.  What do you suggest?  If she will grow out of it I don't mind.

(Also I should mention that I am having my period this week so I'm not sure if my milk supply is lower.  I'm not sure that is the cause of her waking or not.  It probably would have happened regardless )

Does the separation anxiety ever create a problem with your los when putting them down?  I'm not sure if it is causing my lo to need more assistance to sleep.  We have also been teething.  Everything seems to be crumbling.  Oh life is fun!!

I appreciate you ladies for helping me.  You are wonderful!

Yes it gets way better ... and then there's another milestone and it changes again...but that's life!!

Teething and a bit of SA will contribute to NWs...no doubt about it.

Does she take a full feed at 11 and 5?  I'd be trying to eliminate one of these.  Here are some thoughts for you to consider:

1)  At bedtime feed...BF as usual and introduce a bottle.  See if she takes it or not.  It could be that your milk supply is getting low towards the end of the day and she's not getting what she needs to get through the night????  This might eliminate the 11 feed.

2)  At 5.00am - start to introduce water instead of a BF OR just gradually reduce the amount of the feed over a week.  She might figure out that it's not worth waking up for

If she is regularly waking at 11 and 5 then it's sounding like she's waking out of habit.  My LO was doing this and I gave water instead of milk and pretty soon she didn't bother waking for the feed.

What do you think?

Thanks.

Last night I tried to give her a bottle and a sippy cup with milk.  She would not drink it.  She woke at 10pm, 1am, 5am.  I tried water at 5 and she would have nothing to do with it.  I heard her tummy making noises  so I fed her.  Then it messes up our 7 am feed.  I saw a post about introducing a bottle to a bf baby.  Is she too old (8months) to accept a bottle?   What worked with you?  Can I get my milk supply up?

there are various things you could do to increase your supply - I'd check out the BF board for tips - before you start introducing formula.  At her age you may find it's better to go for a sippy cup rather than a bottle if you do go down that route.

However if she woke at 10am and 1am and went back to sleep,  she wasn't hungry at those times....

Oh sorry, I did feed her at both 10 and 1.  She sucked for 15-20min each time.  I will look at increasing my supply.  Thanks
