I'm thinking that I can't keep it and keep adding to it each time if I pump off the first few ounces every time as that would give me a bottle full of foremilk, right?

So, If I'm engorged and/or trying to reduce amount of foremilk Ioan is getting in a feed (gas issues  ;)) should I just dump it?

I only ask as I think I read somewhere that you can keep this milk and keep adding to it throughout the day, so I'm confused (doesn't take much, I know  :-[)

I've heard of people who do exactly as you describe and make up an emergency stash of milk which will be higher in foremilk (for those real emergencies.)
It is valuable breast milk, it does contain 'some' fat - but it will basically be a very high proportion of foremilk :-\
Frankly I wouldn't bother - especially if Ioan is prone to gas issues.
And if you don't bother, you don't worry about sterility, hygiene, pump washing and storage.

Awel, I've been pumping the first little bit of milk for some feeds for a while now, and I just pump and dump.
As Emma said, if he's prone to gas issues you probably won't ever want to feed it to him anyway. And it sure does make life easier not having to sterilise every time. :)

You could freeze it to add to cereal when he starts weaning?

Awel,

when I was pumping after feeds I would just add the 2 together.  The milk pumped after she had fed was really thick so it was just thinned out by the foremilk.  :-*

Actually I was wondering that - is that an option or would it still cause the same issues few months down the line?

If you've got the freezer space no harm in hanging on to it and having a go - and you don't mind the washing/storage business. It will certainly be less of an issue if it is one at all by that point.

Awel, he'll be that much bigger then. Shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm trying to think of something to say!

I quite like breast milk. DH would rather rip his tongue out than try it. He used to gag when I tasted D's bottles to see if they were warm enough

That book 'Fresh Milk' has an ice cream recipe with bm in the back.

Very good to use bm for pie crusts apparently!

Michelle, I don't think that's that weird!  I had to taste mine as I had excess lipase issues which meant it soured pretty quickly so if it'd been in the fridge for over an hour I had to make sure it was ok to use - that used to make me gag - even when it wasn't sour - it actually tasted quite nice but the thought of it turned my stomach - no idea why ???

:o  :o  :o  WOW!  I am definitely going to have to look into this!  It sounds really wicked but it's one of those things that would have me in stitches - getting DH eating BM products (he's really squeamish about BM) lol!  Oooh, would that be really wicked?

Awel, another thought sprang to mind, I'm not sure if you have anything similar where you are but our local hospital takes donations of BM for the preemies.  I don't know if I like the idea of my baby receiving someone elses bm but the thought of helping someone else is quite a nice one...

Actually good point! there are 'milk banks' here where you can donate milk.
Jo, think its mostly coz I loathe milk, to the point I can't watch someone drink a huge glass of milk, so my own milk feels even more icky to me, partly coz I can't see it as milk IYKWIM, but as something coming out of me (like tears, blood etc) :-X
