When do they do this?
« on: February 13, 2008, 03:33:23 am »
Hi,

My LO just turned one and I want to know when your LOs started feeding themselves with a spoon and drinking from a sippy cup. Also when did you start giving breakfast before milk? My LO is also waking up at night & staying up for 2 hours so I'm wondering if the amount of solids she's eating is the cause.

She shows no interest in using the spoon and she likes to put the sippy cup in her mouth like other toys but shows no interest in drinking from it. She drinks water from a bottle on her own.

She still likes to pick up some pieces of food to eat but has no interest in holding larger pieces & biting from it.

How do I get her interested?

Hi there!

I know everyone's lo will do things at different times but here is what we did.  We introduced a sippy cup (with water only) at 5 months and she's taken it ever since then.  dd is now 27 months and she still gets a sippy cup of milk right when she wakes and breakfast an hour later. With my dd and ds I have given them a spoon while I feed them. They chew on their spoon and 'help' make a mess :P  I don't remember the actual point when dd really started using spoons/forks more than her fingers but she will still occasionally put her fork down and pick something up with her fingers. I think as long as we are modeling the use of utensils, they will 'get it'.   Have you tried different types of sippy cups? Will she drink from a straw?  My dd really loves the sippy straw cups. There are several kinds. There is even a cup that has three different attachments. The first is a nipple just like a bottle and then it graduates until it is like a regular sippy cup. It is suposed to be really helpful in transitioning from a bottle to a sippy cup.

Are you feeding your dd when she wakes at night?  Do you think there could be any other reasons behind the wakings (overtired possibly?)

My DS started using the sippy right around his first birthday; I had to try a bunch of sippy cups; the only one he would drink from initially was the take n toss cups---i don't think they have to work too hard to get the fluid out.
He just mastered the spoon about 1 mo ago (16 mos); but I have been working on it since 1 yr; I would put the food on the spoon and then he would put it in his mouth.

I think she will start to get more interested very soon; just because she will naturally be trying to become more independent. (there was a couple of months where I could only give DS finger foods because he did not want to be fed; he wanted to do it himself and he had not yet mastered spoon)

Evervy child is different so i wouldnt worry too much....my dd1 started using a sippy cup fromabout six months for her water with her solid meals....but didnt start using it independantly until she waswell over a year old...andthe same with feeding herself - she didnt like getting her hands mucky so didnt start feeding herself independently for a long time...whereas my dd2 is 9 months old and hates being fed but loves plunking her hand in her food and licking it off her fingers!

DD has had a cup since 5 months for water.  she then had a cup of milk (morning and night) from 1 year.  we stopped milk in the morning at 18months because she wouldn't want her breakfast but she has a cup of milk with her cereal.  we stopped night time milk at 2years because she is potty trained and it would make her wake in the night for a wee, but she has a cup of milk with her tea an hour before bed.

as for feeding herself, some days she does and some days she won't, she CAN - has been able to since about 20months, but it doesn't mean she chooses to.  I try not to worry, she won't leave home wanting me to feed her (I hope  :o)
