Milk Storage/ funky frozen milk!!
« on: February 16, 2008, 19:40:45 pm »
Hi all

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with expressed frozen BM.............I express and freeze almost daily (and can often be found gazing lovingly at my limited but much loved freezer stash!)

Anyway, DH gave some to LO last night when I went out and I came back to find approx 20oz defrosted but still in the storage bags in the sink! :o Before attempting murder I gave DH the opportunity to explain and he said it's because it smelled funny..................it smelled almost metallic. I tasted some and it was not sour though different to fresh expressed BM. It did not taste or smell sour. After realising that all 25oz smelled the same DH decding it could not all be off and fed LO some of the metallic BM...........LO was fine, he took it with no fuss and was not unwell  in any way.

I usually freeze within 1-2d of expressing and the milk is in a new fridge/freezer so I know it's cooled/ frozen properly. I store it in Lansinoh storage bags.

Has anyone else experienced this?? Am I wrong to keep it in fridge for sometimes 24-48 hours prior to freezing.

I feel so sad thinking my stash may be in some way tainted. :-[

Look forward to your help.

Ninax

They're perfectly fine.  Frozen bm often have this smell/taste (soapy or fishy) once it has been defrosted.  I believe it is due to excess lipase (a fat enzyme in the bm).  I have heard that if you heat it up prior to freezing it the smell is not there or even double bagging it.  But if your lo takes it well then I wouldn't worry about it.

BTW once the bm has been defrosted, do not freeze it again.  Use it within 48 hrs.

Wow what a relief! And actually I thought defrosted milk has to be used straight away and so it was all tipped down the sink, wish I had known, all that time spent expressing.....................

Thanks so much.....off to gaze at my stash again!

Glad it's not just me doing this! And actually my DH was pretty upset too wasting BM..........he calls it the 'white nectar'!

I cannot recall frozen BM smelling like this with my first child...........does the smell mean there is excess lipase in my milk or is it in all BM in fairly standard amounts?

We call it liquid gold.  I don't know about your bm having way more than the norm (but what is the norm?) but don't worry about it.  DS didn't have a problem with frozen bm until recently so he has formula in his occassional bottles.  So we end up having to dump the stash.  I couldn't do it so I had dh do it.
