breast pump recommendation?
« on: February 17, 2008, 04:48:00 am »
Was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice/recommendations for a breast pump.  (I'm in Canada)

I am really hoping to have more success this time with bf but am kind of thinking I will need a pump again.

Quick back story... I never really had my milk come in. I started with a hospital grade pump while still in hospital about 3 days after Ella was born, then rented one when I got home.  I never could get more than an ounce or two. I also took domperidone.  Ella latched fine, I went to a lactation clinic and they said it was all fine, but she continued to lose weight. She went from 8lbs 6 down to 5 lbs (3900 to 2260kg) and we ended up in hospital just after 6 weeks. It was her reflux that turned out to be the main culprit but once she was in hospital I stopped bf ( supplemented with frozen to 9 weeks) and went to formula as it was just too tough all around. It was then we saw how much she reeeeallly ate! She was eating 8-10oz at every feed but would bring so much of it back up! So I really don't know how my milk was, other than I couldn't pump much.

okay so that wasn't so quick...  :-[ ;)  I just really want it to work this time and I want to do whatever possible to facilitate it. Should I start out with a pump? Wait and see? I was looking at something not hospital (I would rent one again if need be) but not something manual either. (tried the avent last time but, well, if the hospital pump couldnt' get it... lol)  Maybe a Medela? The swing, or the one below it? I don't have to work but I am hoping to introduce the bottle so dh can do some feeds eventually, etc. I just want to well I just want it to work!

Any thoughts and or advice most welcome!!

Thanks.  :-* :-*

I have the Medela pump in style (not the one with the let down setting, but the one right under it) and it works great!

thanks for the speedy response!  :) I love the look of that one, but I think it may be out of my budget.   :-[ The one down is the swing and then the one under that is the mini electric I think...  I think those three are in price range from $100 to $300?

I used the Ameda Lactaline personal, it's a double electric. Got it from a friend and used it very heavily for 11 months, it was great! x

I have tried various breast pumps and the medela was by far the best, I broke it when Bfin g thomas and didnt want to fork out for a new one so I got the hand held Avent which actually is great, good for me as I didnt/dont do a whole lot of pumping so more cost efficient for me.

Hi i've also got the Ameda personal, i've just bought a second one as the first was lent to 4 friends and i think its burnt out from over use. Double pump so really quick, i pump after a feed this helps your supply growwwwwwwwwww. 5*

Good luck Kate
I know all about it not working and think this pump was my saviour, and of course this site. :-*

well I got the Medela swing today. I love the look of the ameda! That's what I used when I rented. but too much money. same with the pump in style medela.  I can't believe that even though our dollar is on par or above the US the prices are SO much more here! The swing was 200 dollars.  :-\

I'll let you know how I get on... and thanks!  :)
