19 mo old sleeps only 10 hour nights
« on: February 27, 2008, 20:21:55 pm »
Our little 19 month old only sleeps 10-10.5 hours per night.  Is his nap too long or short?  Here's our routine:

6 or 6:30 wake-up
12:20-2:20 nap (he's been waking early and I get him to go back to sleep)
8 or 8:30

(if we aim for 8 he falls asleep quicker.  If we try earlier, like 7:30, it takes him longer to fall asleep and bedtime ends up being at 8:30)

Should I just shorten his nap?  Or start it earlier?

I'm not sure which way to go, here.

Has he suddenly started sleeping less or is this his usual? My dd is 26 months and has pretty much always done 10.5 hours at night with 2 - 3 hours for nap. Some kids just need less sleep. :-[ Does he function well on 12.5 hours?

Is he happy or very cranky during the day?  I can rarely get my 15 month old to have more than 10 or occasionally 11 hr nights these days...

I would ask the same thing as Erin did... how is his behaviour overall? If he seems happy and not tired then I would think 12.5hrs is what he needs :). You can try to shorten the nap to get longer night if you want an earlier bedtime but he'll probably do about the same overall...

Thanks for your encouraging replies.
Ya, he's always done a 10 hour night.  It's like he has an internal clock.  If we manage to get him to bed at 7:30 pm, he wakes at 5:30 am.
He's happy, not cranky or tired.
So maybe I'll just leave it alone :-)
Thanks again!
