How much effect does caffeine have on breastmilk?
« on: March 05, 2008, 19:10:45 pm »
DS is 7 weeks old and had two really, really bad napping days last week.  I have been charting his schedule for two weeks so I keep studying his days to find out what the heck went wrong.  Then I recalled that on the morning of bad nap day #1 I had a Starbucks mocha and the little decaf box on the cup wasn't checked.  Even though I asked for decaf I think I got regular coffee.  Besides the occasional diet coke, this would be the first heavy dose of caffeine that DS would have had since birth.  Do you think this could have been the culprit?  If so, should I watch the caffeine intake in general?  I didn't think that a soda of coffee now and then would matter, but maybe it does.

PS-I BF DD for 18 months and I cannot recall if I watched my caffeine intake or not while BFing her.

I've always wondered this too...  I think I was pretty strict not having caffeine with my other 2 but not sure if I needed to be.  Sometimes I just really need a pick me up mid-morning in these newborn days...but I def. don't want to if I'm going to be keeping Caeden awake!

Just a thought that it might not be the caffiene but actually the milk they put in the mocha.  With DD1 I had such trouble that I cut out everything.  But this second time around I cut out dairy and was able to keep a couple of cups of coffee in the morning.  The dairy seemed to be the culprit for me this time as I ate/eat everything else.

Caffeine affects all babies differently. The general guide is that if you completely dropped caffeine in pregnancy and hardly ever drink coffee then your baby will notice it more when it does happen. If you continue to drink coffee in moderation then your baby's system is more accustomed to it. The younger the baby the harder it is to metabolize.

So if baby is 7 weeks and you hardly ever drink caffeine but did that day - it's likely it did make a difference. But then what happened on the other bad napping day!
