Dropping feeds, decreased pumping, solid intake?
« on: March 12, 2008, 04:28:25 am »
I work three days a week and on those days my son 7.5 month old son gets three 6 ounce bottles during the 9 hours I'm gone. We started with 4 ounce bottles, then 5, then his nanny said he still seemed hungry when he finished his bottles, and I'm certain he was because on the days I would work he'd wake at night hungry, on the days I was home he'd sleep for at least 10 hours. I increased the bottles to 6 ounces and no more nightwakings. On the days I work he's BF in the morning, than once or twice more before bed (in addition to the bottles). On the days I'm home, he eats a little more frequently, and I've not discouraged that as I'm always worried about my supply for the pumping.

The trouble is I'm having a hard time pumping 18 ounces - my pumping output has decreased to about 14 ounces, despite the fenegreek/blessed thistle, oatmeal every day, gallons of water, as much rest as possible, fancy pump, three pumping sessions a day, etc. I think I'm doing everything I can, but chime in if I'm missing something that worked for you.

He's just getting the hang of solids. Is it conceivable that at 7.5 months, once he's eating a decent amount of food 14 ounces of EBM in the day would be enough? I'd be comfortable having him wake up to BF on the days I work, but that's not going to work because he's crying for more food with the nanny, so that doesn't really seem fair to either of them.
TIA!

If you can't manage to pump as much as you need to I'd make up the ounces with formula rather than solids at his age, more calories and nutritional value than first solid foods. It's not a great deal of formula and would take the pressure off you.

That makes sense - I'm just hoping to use the formula as a last resort and am hoping/wondering if with a little food in his belly he might stretch longer in the day for his feeds and make up for it in the evening. We'll just see how it goes, I'm a pumping machine these days, hoping to build up a little stash and be able to get more from my pumping sessions at work. Thanks!

I also work three 12 hour shifts and I can't pump as much milk as he drinks out of a bottle. I did some reasearch and that's because the bottle flows faster and freely but with breastfeeding, the baby has to work.

On a good day I can bring home 14 oz and on a "bad" day I can only get 10oz. my "goal" is at least twelve so I have three four oz bottles. I then try to pump during the week, but I only try to get 2oz, so it's quick and easy.

My son loves his solids (veggies and fruit for lunch and cereal with breastmilk for dinner topped of by a breast feeding)f I mix his crereal with 3 oz of breast milk.

If you don't already, can I suggest you store some of your milk if possible?  We have a frozen supply so that I don't stress out too much if I can't pump enough for the next day.

Good luck.

I'm working on the freezer stash - I had one, but it disappeared quickly! I think I'll work one week of a time seeing if I can get a little ahead of the game again.

I know it's hard to find time to pump but I try to do it while I'm feeding him lunch. I took an old nursing bra that was the wrong size when I bought it ($15 at Target) and cut a hole in each side approx where my nipple is. I can then put the shield on my breast, poke it through the hold, attach the bottle/pump part and then I've got hands free pumping. You'll look ridiculous and I call it my Madonna moment but it works. I shared my new bra with a few of the other mommies at work to try and they loved it enough to go an buy a cheap bra to cut up. I just put it right on over my regular nursing bra. It's much cheaper than the bras made specifically for pumps and it works.

Does your ds do a df?  I fit another pumping session in at home around 10 pm, well after my ds2 is in bed.  That helps me get a little more milk for his bottles.  So my nursing/pumping day looks like
7am - bf
10am - pump
1pm - bf (daycare is close enough to do that :D)
4pm - pump
7pm - bedtime bf
10pm - pump

The bra idea is genius! Now, if he'd only eat a solids lunch...
No dream feed here. I was focusing on pumping right after he ate, thinking I could increase supply and have bigger pumps at work. I've given that about a week and it's not going so well, so today I pumped 1.5 hours after he ate and did much better. The good news--I am slowly gaining on him - yea! I think we can make this work, I also decreased his last bottle with his nanny from 6 to 5 ounces on Monday with no complaints, so I'm going to keep that up.
