6pm nursing ALWAYS is a struggle
« on: March 15, 2008, 23:31:39 pm »
Ok, I'm not even sure this is a breastfeeding issue, but I figured I'd start with that.

Caeden is 5.5 weeks, and for the last week or so straight and often before that as well, when I nurse him at 6pm (give or take 15-30 mins depending on how the day is going), he is ALWAYS fussy during that feed.  He will act hungry, ready to nurse, latches on, sips through the let down and ok, he usually comes off then at most feeds for a little burp (I have a fairly forceful letdown).  But then he will continue this way, suck for at most 30 seconds then just pop off crying, hard.  This will continue, he always acts like he wants to keep nursing, will root and latch on again, then he pops off again crying.  I feel like I can never get a full feed into him at that time, like I don't think he ever empties the breast.  It's just so strange that it is always this way at the 6pm feed.

Now, as far as other issues, we've been having major nap problems.  He's suddenly in the last week forgotten how to put himself to sleep and stay asleep.  It's been very difficult, but usually by 6 he's gotten the last cycle's nap ok.  He does have gas sometimes in the evenings, but the thing is that when he does this, if I stop nursing him he's ok, so it doesn't seem like gas to me.
here's when I feed him...7am, 10, 1pm, 4, 6, bed at 7, feed at 8:30 then DF at 11.  He also nurses usually once at night, anywhere between 3:00 and 4:30.

Any ideas?

Hmmm...what would happen if you delay that 6pm feed to 7pm..just before bedtime? Is it worth a try to see if he feeds better?

I think sometimes the fussiness at that time of day is related to naps and general tiredness; just being ready for bed KWIM? Is she taking her full hour nap at 5pm?

What you are describing is classically related to overtiredness/ tiredness. I found with Sam at this point he would hardly feed at all and be REALLY cross but once he was actually falling asleep I could do a 'dreamfeed'. Not ideal in terms of EASY but the only way I could get him to feed as he as so overtired.

Josie finds it MUCH harder to handle a forceful letdown when she is tired.
