Swaddling
« on: March 17, 2008, 06:42:33 am »
Hi,
Can anyone give me advice on swaddling? DD is nearly 10weeks old & cannot tolerate sleeping without being swaddled...infact, if she manages to get her arms free you can guarantee that she will wake herself up with the flailing arms! At what age should she not be swaddled? Is it doing her any harm? Would like to move her into a sleeping bag but this is not possible as we are in Oz (& even thought it's Spring it's still about 20degrees at nighttime) & she still needs the muslin wrap!
Thanks in advance,
Caroline

Caroline hi i am also in Australia so i know how you feel in regards to swaddling and the heat. My DD2 was the same age when we had that last long stretch of heat.
Have you seen these they are quiet light i was going to get one but end up weining my DD2 from hers.

Hi,
I'm in Perth & the heat doesn't seem to be ending this year:-(
I have bought, used & loved the Kiddopotamus Swaddle however she is now to big for it! (She also managed to get out of it!) I really don't want to buy the next size up as I would like her to be able to sleep with her arms free.
Am I doing her any harm still swaddling her?
Thanks,
Caroline

Hi there....I just wanted to add that we swaddled till 6 months old and if I had felt my kiddos still needed it...I may have gone longer.   I am a firm believer in swaddling!

No harm at all in swaddling! ;D

We swaddled DS until he weaned himself at about 6 months. I've read some babies that were being swaddled until 9+ months too. Some people swear by the Miracle Blanket and it's pretty thin too but costs about $30 online.

We swaddled until 3 1/2 or 4 months...can't totally remember...but I know there's no harm in swaddling for as long as your lo wants to.  We stopped using it because she kept wiggling out and it would end up around her neck.

10 weeks is sooooo tiny.  Of COURSE he wakes himself up flailiing - that is why our dear wise ancestors have swaddled for 1000's of years - all babies do that.

Our lo became a "houdini" at about 4 months but still needed the swaddle to sleep soundly.  Finally at 5.5 mos she broke out in the night and was able to resettle herself - she also became a tummy sleeper at that time, because she'd roll right over when we put her down.

We've only just stopped the swaddle at 5 months, that was after a long weaning process of 1 arm out the legs etc. I used the miracle blanket, its very good.
