Is 4 BF a day enough to keep supply?
« on: March 19, 2008, 06:02:00 am »
I was just wondering if 4 BF a day will keep my supply ok?

DD is 4.5months old and feeds at 4hrly during the day and sleeps through the night (for 3 weeks). She doesn't seem ready for solids and so far is happy, I'm just hoping it stays that way! With my DS I had started him on solids by now, so exclusively BF at this age is a new one, and I'm hoping not to have to start solids too soon!!!

Anyone exclusively BF before 6m on 4BF a day?

Gosh lucky you! In a normal situation your body makes as much milk as you need when you need it, so you should be absolutely fine. Most first foods are in such small amounts and have such little nutritional / calorific value as to make very little difference to their overall intake, so don't worry about introducing the solids.

We are feeding 4 times a day (have been for a month) and things are going well.  If you notice your supply dwindling you could throw in a day of pumping after feeds every now and then

Lucky me I know! But persistance pays off!! Thanks ladies for your replies. Every so often I pump at 9.30 pm just to get a little milk to save, so hopefullly that will help.

My ds was the same... sleeping through from just before 4mo, and only feeding 4hrly during the day (ie. 4 feeds per day).  I too worried about it!  But he was/is on the bigger side, so maybe that had something to do with it.  Never fear though.. he doesn't sleep through at the moment (7mo)!!  But I'm fairly certain it's not hunger related now.  We only started solids at 6mo.  He did have a week or two of not sleeping through at around 5m or so, but I just fed him, and then he went back to STTN.  Maybe a growth spurt??  Or course I was advised to start solids, but I didn't want to/didn't see the need.

Enjoy it!!
