1yr old refusing to drink
« on: March 23, 2008, 08:23:25 am »
I am really not quite sure about this one, Graham has decided to give up drinking at 1. He pushes the cups away and screams, and I have tried every vesel you can think of. It seems to have been since he had a horrible viral D & V bug he drank a lot when he was being sick but now there is no way liquid will pass his lips. His appetite is brilliant and he will eat pretty much anything, but the lack of fluid is causing constipation and although I try to make his food as watery as possible - it makes the self feeding thing a bit hard.

Anyone got any tips??

I just suggested to another Mummy smoothies, do you think he would like them?  They are of course thicker and less 'liquid' like if thats whats putting him off?

Yikes - that's tough cause you can't really reason with them at that age!  My ds drinks his milk out of the cup with a flip straw (they aren't spill proof but I keep him in the kitchen with them).  The smoothies is a good idea.  You could also try putting his drinks in a take out cup with straw (like the ones from Mcdonalds or something).  Let us know how you get on with the situation...

When my dd went through a stage like this we would put liquid in all sorts of things. Her favourite were some little novelty shot glasses we had. They were not glass so did not have to worry there. We also put it in jelly moulds, in plastic syringes, we made ice lollies with water and apple juice and we gave water in a bowl with a straw. Just a few ideas, they can be messy but in this kind of situation I don't think it matters.

Oh - and for the constipation you could use the glycerin supositories - worked really well for my second.
