Never bought formula before....advice please

Hi there...

  I am about to head to the store to purchase formula for my 9 month old who has been exclusivley bf for the past 9 months.  He is on a nursing strike (day #4) and I need to give him something. Can anyone tell me if there is a particular type/brand of formula I need to buy for his age...or is it pretty much all the same.  To be perfectly honest....I've never even looked at formula so I have NO clue.

I think they're all pretty much the same to be honest,they have so many giudelines they have to adhere to nowadays. My doctor said go for the brand you know you can get easily in an emergency!! (ie from your local shop,rather than be guided on price or popularity). My ds was bf but had a bottle of SMA for his df and didn't have a problem having the two alongside each other. HUGS for the hunger strike-like you need anymore stress with two little kiddies!!!!!

I think they should all be the close to the same.  I believe they are all regulated.  We looked for ones with Omega 3 and 6 but I don't know how important that is.  Don't buy a lot of one kind as some babies don't like the tastes of certain ones, although Aedric was OK with any of the ones we gave him.

Hugs Shelby.

I use Goodstart 2.  I do agree that you have to keep offering, breast or bottle.  Maybe do it in a quiet room without distractions.  There was a time that ds was on a strike and I had to recreate the bedtime routine (dim lights, wrapping him) to get him to start nursing again.  If you do decide to go the bottle route, then you can do the same thing.  HTH

Callie isn't on strike but does refuse feeds regularly due to reflux and we have to recreate the bedtime feed too.

dh knew this guy who tried about every formula out there until he found the one that made his ds's poop look the same as breastmilk poop... just a thought.

You could always get the small cans and try out a few if your lo might refuse... ???

parents choice is a great brand too (for US and Canada)

Don't let the smell or taste bother or scare you. Try untill you find one. Concentrate will be easier to do then powder and isn't as nasty, no powder taste. Ready made can be good too in a pinch, but its the most expensive way to go.
