19 mth started to scream at daytime naps (long one)
« on: April 04, 2008, 09:02:08 am »
Hi, I am hoping for some help / suggestions on how to cope with my DS who was going down for his 1 nap with no issues at all and would sleep for about 1 - 1 1/2 hours. Now it's screaming as soon as i walk out of the room and then he will only sleep for 30 / 40 min.

I do the WI/WO out and he knows it's bedtime because if he is sitting or standing up he will always get down and lie on his tummy waiting for me to come up to his cot, I always say the same thing, "Mum loves you, it's bedtime" and then i leave the room, as soon as the door is closed screams start again. i have sometimes left him for 2/3 min then go in or sometimes i go in after a minute it really just depends on how distressed he is. It can sometimes take up to 10 WI/WO for him to go to sleep, this may not seem that long for some of you guy's but for me it's hard work as I've had over 5 months of no issues.

Now I've started back to work 2 days a week (been in the job for 2 months now) and he goes to daycare 1 day and Grandma has him on Tues / Wed (wed my house cleaning day  ::) ) He has been going to the same daycare for over 9 months now only for the one day and has not had any issues sleeping there. He is also used to going to Grandmas on the Wed and used to sleep there OK as well now it the same at Grandmas as it is at home screaming and 30/40 min nap.

I did try for just one week to go back to work full-time but i couldn't cope with not being with my DS for the long so i changed jobs, i suppose that I'm wondering if this screaming is going back to the time when i wasn't with him and it could be a case of SA? He is very clinging at the moment and don't like me out of his sight, even has to come to the toilet with me  :o, so how can i reassure him during the day so that he will go down for his nap OK, as his short nap is starting to make him wake early in the morning.

Oh and he is fine at nightime.

Phew..sorry for the long post...hope you can help

It does sound like he might be going through some SA, with you being away for a week...

If wi/wo is too much for you, then try sitting by his cot until he's asleep and then slowly move towards the door... so the gradual withdrawal method instead

Also it sounds like he's getting quiet overtired with the short nap and early waking. What time are you putting him down for a nap and what time is bedtime? You might want to try an earlier naptime and bedtime for 3 days or so to let him catch up on some sleep.

Any chance he might be teething???

thanks for the reply Layla, his bedtime is around 7:15pm give or take 5 min and i try to get him down for a nap at about 12:30. You could be right re over tiredness as Grandma sometimes does not put him down until 1 / 1:30pm

I had better success today as i really tried to play heaps with him and was alway there when he needed or wanted me and although he did cry out when i first shut his door he was asleep within 5 min and his naptime was 12:10pm so i think earlier naptimes and bedtime could be the go...thanks heaps  ;D

Oh thats great to hear!!! See if you can talk to grandma and try to have the nap starting more or less the same time as sometimes pushing it 1hr ahead can add to the overtiredness (and with us it also means a much shorter nap).

So glad that he settled within 5mins... what a relief!

Let me know how things are going :)

Well now we have the end of daylight savings to conten with  ::) but I'm going to keep to the old time for the next week and gradually move it by 15 min per day. hopefully by the end of next week we will be on the right time  ;)

Now i just have to talk to Grandma to get her on broad and it's all sweet
